Non reggae artists can't play real reggae. The smart ones get a reggae producer (using reggae musicians) to do the work for them like Gainsbourg or Paul Simon.
But there have been some exceptions, this is one I rated when it came out:

The excellent Taj Mahal,Mo Roots album,with the Slave Driver track produced by Marley himself.Then just to confirm that a bluesman can do some serious Reggae,check out Corey Harris,Zion Crossroads.

There are 2 types:

Non reggae artists trying to do a "reggae" track, or having a go at a reggae-type of vibe like Stevie Wonder, Gilberto Gil or 10CC.....nearly always rubbish IMO

Non reggae artists going to JA or a reggae producer (using reggae musicians) with loads of money from their recording advance expenses (provided by big labels) to do the work for them like Gainsbourg, S.Oconnor or Paul Simon ( or even Gilberto Gil again)
Obviously much better results but...cheating IMO!

you are overlooking numerous reggae inspired groups,like ones i mentioned. i mean stevie wonder and gilberto gil have done nowt of interest for aeons.
somebody mentioned lenny kravitz earlier? who can excuse that man?!
that gainsbourg stuff i found refreshing,good on him!
