As you, my fellow purists know, not too many non reggae groups can convicingly play good reggae. But there have been some exceptions.
Here are a few of my faves. Would be curious to hear others.
-Paul Simon - Mother and Child Reunion (beautiful song)
-Mandrill - Love One Another (what a great, slept-on, multifaceted group Mandrill was)
-Cymande - Zion I (what a great, slept-on, multifaceted group Cymande was)
-10cc - Dreadlock Holiday (laugh if you want, not afraid to admit I like this one)
-Sade - Slave Song

Re: Favorite reggae songs by non reggae groups
ooh,i'm not a fan of these^^
The Fall covered Kimble the Nimble and their vocalist uses plenty of toaster inspired quirks
''redondo beach'' by Patti Smith on the horses record seems reggae inspired
groups like Public Image Ltd,The Slits and The Pop Group played an inspiring mix of reggae/ska/dub and poppy punk, great individual groups
honestly now sade?? that's a bit sado-masochistic!!

"Miami Beach" - Garland Jeffreys [ina Mikey Dread kinda style] (from ESCAPE ARTIST bonus EP)...about the Miami Beach race riot (of 1979?) feat. LKJ supplying massive street cred with a news-report-style spoken commentary. (
(Another cut on the EP - "We the People" - wasn't half bad either.)

I second that emotion: Garland Jeffreys' Miami Beach (on YouTube at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gi9gxURyuYA) and We the People (on YouTube at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Cgd1NtGMUJA) are perfect reggae!
