It is known Lee Perry did some special dubplates for Mikey Dread. So most likely he did some for other producers/persons too to pay his debts or just to get some money by selling special mixes of his songs.

Sound systems are not something I've ever associated with Scratch, maybe this is just my ignorance so I'm hoping this will shed some light on the subject for me and be some really interesting material.

I also read about the dubs scratch had done for Mikey Dread, but I thought they were just sound effects as used on the Mikey Dread show, just short radio jingles/intro's?

Scratch specials (imo) are the very stripped back mono mixes (without Scratch vocals) like the Bucky skank versions. I'm sure this was what the mc's and sound systems wanted (Raw instrumentals) so the mc's would have room to mix and add their vocals. Surely these are his sound system specials? I've also never heard Scratch ever once "represent" any sound system in any of his music, not even Tubby's, that's not to say it didn't happen though, probably most of his releases went to Dub Plate first.

I kind of hope that they are actual dubplates preserved - a missing section of the charted Perry history - but the lack of specifics, i.e., which sounds and sound system operators these dubplates were made for, makes me think ed could be right. What would be really nice is if Lee Perry himself explained his dubplate productions as featured on this comp... but with all respect I wonder if he can even remember them! ;)

Nice work as always, Mick!

Great news about the new discography book, too...

According to Ansel Collins: "when the disc jockeys would play Scratch's instrumental music the crowd would just run away". This happened circa in late 60's/early 70's.

So the instrumental music which was popular in UK wasn't popular in JA. The first time he was popular in JA as a producer when he recorded with Junior Byles.
