Most of Misty In Roots 12"s come in at 8 minutes plus.

What about Gregory isaacs - My Knows It All/ War Of The Stars 12"? Top tune, both sides long and tuff.

Augustus Pablo 12"s frequently feature 2 versions spliced together to make a 12" side.

I like to "cheat" and make my own if the song permits. I record the A, then B, then splice 'em together for the Poor Man's Extended Jam, nothing new to many of you, but you can get a 7-8 min jam or longer. Take for instance a Johnny Clarke song with a Tommy McCook horn version and a King Tubby dub all mixed in a row and you get 10 minutes...of course it's now in mp3 on the computer or ipod...just me being desperate...

A question of whether the entire length of a track was as a result of one original studio session i.e playing and recording a single riddim for 10min has been troubling my mind.However with more spins of singles,i have noticed that many extended versions are a result of two intertwined tunes most notably a vocal and its version.A very few are unnoticeable e.g Beggarman Child Bw Richman Vs Poorman by P.Gad.

Now this keeps me thinking that most of the 12s are previously released 7s whose As and Bs were just printed on one side with no space between e.g General penitentiary by B uhuru on 7' and again the very same on 12'.

So,what does it mean 'Extended'.If A & B are connected,is the result an extended tune?Or a tune is extended right from the time of recording?

I'm quite sure they recorded the riddim for like 3 minutes. Then a singer voiced his tune over the empty riddim. Then maybe there was a deejay version recorded and after that a dub version was mixed. So you had three different tracks on the same riddim. Then these three tracks were simply mixed together (pretty much like Greggae explained he does today). The result is a 9-minute-long tune with vocal/deejay/dub-version in it.

Sometimes a track will fade out but you can tell that it must have continued in the session in the studio because it doesnt actually stop just fades. So the session musicians played on while the record had to be cropped to fit on a 7".Lee Perry seems to differ from other producers in that he did not charge musicians by the hour, which I believe most other producers did, if a track was going particularly well he would continue to record.

Many songs & their Dub were never extended so it makes sense to me to create them.

Tracks like Yabby U & King Tubby's - Walls Of Jerusalem (Extended 12inch), all 13 minutes of it - are beauties!

Just happen to be listening to Roots Reggae Party Vol 2 on Silver Camel, which features 4 rhythms done in vocal/DJ/dub or vocal/DJ/DJ again style (presumably Vol 1 is the same, don't have it though).

Volume 1 is the same. Not Vocal DJ/DJ though but all are vocal/dj/dub. Two great albums.

I bought Vol 2 because I liked Kojak at the time, but I think only one track is actually by him, Tense Me Tense is Ranking Trevor I think.
