Re: Welton Irie drops the N-Bomb?
When Welton, Big Youth, Jazzbo and others used the word in song, it wasn't a "bomb", it was still just a word. Politically correctness has changed the way people see the word, as if in some way censoring words also changes attitudes. It is even more perverse to suggest that those who have had this hateful word hurled at them countless times are in the wrong to reclaim it, and use it as they see fit. It would be like kicking a man repeatedly and then castigating him for showing his bruises in public.

I don't think that anyone in this thread said that Welton was wrong in using the word. The OP expressed surprise that the word was in use in reggae of a certain era, but that's all...
I think.
I was once surprised to hear Bob Marley say 'motherfucker' in whatever song that it was (on "The Best of The Wailers", but I no longer have the CD), because I thought that swearing in music was generally not allowed back then...
Edit: we have a swear filter? Okay then - "to hear Bob Marley drop the mf-bomb".

"Hit me from the top you crazy mother funky" is I believe what he said, though I could be wrong.Gabranth wrote:Which tune does he drop the mother-f-word in? There are 900 Best of The Wailers CDs out there![]()

I hate the word, I think it's crass whoever is using it, regardless of their skin colour. I think it shows character that on the whole Jamaican singers have resisted the urge to use the word in their songs. Of course there is nothing wrong with Black people reclaiming the word, but is it better that they rise above the level of of the white people who would use the word? In other words isn't refusing to sit at the back of the bus a better protest than taking down your pants and peeing in the bus? One raises you above your oppressor, the other brings you down to your oppressors level... that's my opinion anyway

Upon further research, the song in question is 'Caution' from 'The Best Of The Wailers' - the 1970 album. Which wasn't actually a compilation.Gabranth wrote:Which tune does he drop the mother-f-word in? There are 900 Best of The Wailers CDs out there![]()
