I like em both. In session, live or played in a dancehall; both play the drums like no other. I prefer the Roots Radics taste wise (and what about Mutabaruka's High Time Players???) to Sly and Robbie but by no means I would say one is better than the other.
There's something in Sly's style that is absent from Scott and vice versa. Sly definately has that steppers / revolution style, while Scott has a more precision, almost robotic but organic syncopation (early Radics sound).

well i personally roots radics are all over revolutionaries because roots radics brought out alot of heavy roots in the early 80's they took over the 80's revolutionaries are good but they have a much older sound of reggae they had their time of share of playing roots but roots radics brought out the new roots sound for the 80's

Style scott make the dub sound of today and tommorrow with Dub syndicate.
Sly and the Taxigang make te dancehall/new roots
of today and tommorrow

If you don't like it refuse it.
I play the old and the new sound of both.

hi roddy
when sly and the revolutionnaries at channel one in the mid 70's were gracing most of the reggae trios lps,as well as the aggravators(under different aliases) had a residency at bunny lee's,when the upsetters(with michael richards, boris gardner, winston wright, vin gordon ,glen dacosta)were pumping the rythms at black ark, nobody got fed up.what's more a rythm track can be sung by a singer, versioned by a dj, played by an instrumentist(saxophonist in most case),dubbed and ultimately versioned by lee perry himself, without annoying whosoever.can we say such a thing with what happened in the 80's with the radics:you hear linvall thompson, barrington levy, freddie mc gregor and the meditations on a same flat rythm, produced by either junjo or linvall thompson and distributed by greesleeves, and you easily get fed up.i mean it somewhat has to do with the snare drum and the drum pattern used by style scott.
if you see today, the most in-demand re-issues in ja music are related to these periods, the 70's exclusively and you cannot find 10 lps like that without coming across these line-ups aforementioned.a little of the roods radics goes a long way with me.so dfinetely saying that other bands didn't step in to create their own sound is really an overstatement to me.i even consider that when gregory isaacs stepped in with his massive selling"night nurse"he was really at the end of his artistic career(for who knows gregory isaacs repertoire between 1972 and 1980).listen again to "extra classics" and you will have an insight of his singing talent, his song themes, and the versatility and multi-faceted talent of the various backing bands there
so much for that.but anyway, there is no accounting for taste.that is just my humble point of view

Fadel,

Thanks for the Insight, i agree with the what you said about the mixing and Dubbing of the 70's records, the issue with the Radics is Just the DRUM PATTERN. Greensleeves could also be the roots of evil in this situation.

Secondly what i mean't about other Bands "Stepping their game up" i was referring to the eighties era 1980-85. Most DJ's were just rhyming to mostly Junjo and studio one stuff. Sly and Robbie were instudio but mostly on tour with Black Uhuru.

Gregory Isaacs was good and getting better until Night Nurse, But when he went "Inna Foreign" esp England thats when his stuff was a little bit different.

All in all it comes to individual taste, I don't mind Listening to other Bands but i prefer Roots radics is who i roll with.

Respect

hi roddy
but the 80's dj even though iam not that much acquainted with most of them like iam of the 70's dj,cannot be put anywhere near the 70's.
is there any landmark recordings from them as you could do them of the 70's.you cannot think about u roy without thinking about"natty rebel""chalice in the palace",jazzbo without"ital corner",dillinger without"cb 200"big outh without"dreadlocks dread""natty cultural dread"prince fari without"message from the kings""psalms fori""and so on;is there any landmark recordings of these 80's dj that were subject to popular demands and re-issues from the record companies.once again ,there is no accounting for taste, but there are standards for judgement for me when trying to set up a parrallele with artists.
no hard feelings my dear
we all stand for the same cause
