Since I was a boy of 8 years in 1977. First tune I remember was Chase The Devil by Max Romeo & The Upsetters.
I heard it on the street from my fat neighbour who was cleaning the leather of his Citroen DS 23 i Pallas.
He had an Upsetters tape running. I remember artists like The Uniques, Burning Spear, Ranking Joe, Dennis Brown, Prince Jazzbo,...we used to listen to.
I couldn`t understand the lyrics cause we didn`t have English at school in the first 2 years.

But I felt that there was sth. very different to rock or punk or pop: The Reggae feel was warmer and brighter. It had (still has) a soul.

Being a reggae listener in a small German town was rough in those days. It was out of style for the other youths who discriminated me for my music. They were interested in listening to stupid metal babylon thing while getting drunk on cheap can beer. When Bob passed in 81 one of the guys said...best thing to the world is Marley`s death....I remember my friend gave him some kicks and lashes. Well done.

I started buying strictly original releases. I treated them well all through the years. I`m glad I did. Today they are worth more.

Give thanks & praise.

The earliest song I remember listening to on the radio is "Israelites" by Desmond Dekker, so 1970 maybe? It took another five years or so before I knew *what* I was listening to, and another year or so after that before I tried playing it myself (bass).

If you told me back then that in 2006 I'd even be listening to Ska and Reggae from Japan, I would have asked for a hit of some of that for me too. It's an amazing world.

James:

I also heard Ska on the radio in the very early days. And my mother used to tell me it was 'skinhead' music. She liked it and showed me how to dance to it. I guess that's the real beginning of things for me and why when I heard the music again 6-7 years later, I found I liked it.

And I Lion:

I too had friends who didn't understand reggae. They were into Rock or even Pop. But I got them back to my flat, filled them full of some improted African weed and played them African Dub 4, or Leggo Dub, or Culture. They soon got the message. And many still have it today and thank me for those times.

And I am so jealous that you kept your records. I also used to look after mine - they were all bought new and all kept MINT in plastic sleeves, no writing, etc, handled like babies.

Although I have most of not all of them again (having paid a very heavy price) very few are in the condition I would have kept them in. I even managed to buy back a few of the self same issues that friends or family had bought off me back then when I sold up. Including my own original copy of Leggo Dub, my first ever dub LP. But moslty I have to take ones with writing on sleeves, scratches on wax, finger marks everywhere. So sad.

Yes Litelet, I could discover things as they were out in the 70s but it wasn't easy going as there was very little proper Reggae on the radio and I lived in Devon then not London. I had a small circle of friends who all collected Reggae so we would take it in turns to go and buy in London. Some records we bought on the basis of reviews in the magazines others we bought in the normal way by hanging round the record shop counter all afternoon and selecting as they span the discs.

I agree with you I-Lion. Hard times when all of
your mates ecxept one were into that hare brained
heavy metal shit, but have to admit that the can
beer tasted excellent in those marvellous times.
Back then in 1982/1983 my first records were
Fari´s Cry Tuff chapter 3, Spear´s Living Dub Vol.
2 and Marley´s Confrontation.
I stopped buying Reggae stuff in the early new
decade & got hooked again in 2002, but have to
buy moderately due to empty pocket stylee.

Great Website!

As for Heavy Metal, early blues-influenced rock was great, and still is.

But anything after Zeppelin's Physical Graffiti by anyone is such crap.

Punk took over because rock was turning into ego-pumping-pop-rock.

Metal is a poor excuse for music and it simply gets worse.

I was dragged along to a Motorhead concert in 1990 (because I didn't drink so was a cheap taxi) and I couldn't believe how awful it was. Even the guitar solos were lame.

Whatever I listen to, I keep coming back to reggae, because as I-Lion rightly says: 'reggae got soul'.

Agree with you Leggo Rocker except "Presence" isn't bad(!) I got into reggae (after liking things like "Young Gifted and Black" and "Double Barrel" just as pop records) because punk was too aggressive for me and my friends just couldn't get into the soul/funk stuff I was into like Bootsy's Rubber Band, Isley Brothers, Johnnie Taylor... so I bought "Talking Blues" by Dillinger and "Two Sevens Clash" and never looked back...
