Sean - lol
of course, got that title wrong ;o)

cheers for the correction mate :o)

======

Scientist did mixing for The Royals for sure and many other tunes for Roy Cousins but I don't think he had any input on that first Kingdom album i.e. the decision making on which tracks were included, decisions on final mixes or anything. That's what I think he's mainly talking about. Plus there are some Dubs on there that don't sound anything like his work and the inclusion of two identical tunes with different mixes makes it suspect straight away. If that was really a 'Scientist' album he would have been involved most of the way through it's creation and two different mixes of the same track would have been a no-no. The first TWO tracks for heavens sake!

Certainly there are some Dubs there that are probably his, Chariot Dub for example which is a Dub of Winston Jarrett's Rocking Vibration. However, Barnabas was mixing on that session as well though it sounds like Scientists work to me. Produced by Roy Cousins of course.
The recent debacle re-issue of High Priest just confirms my suspicions - and surprise surprise there are two different mixes of the one track on that one ;o)

I don't agree with your analysis at all. I think he's a very brave guy taking on these greedy assh*les of the music biz who have sucked the blood of our most cherished musicians and singers for far too long. Mixing engineers are an underclass and pretty low down on that particular food chain and it shouldn't have to be that way.

More power to him :o)

Producers and Label owners put names on the sleeves what sales and what is in fashion.

Mix and remix is standaard for reggae.

Producers leave there tapes behind and engineers mix them in there own fashion.

For dubplates/7" versions/ 12" version/album versions etc.

Sometimes more than two engineers mixing the tracks.

That is what I&I call versions.

Interesting stuff in this thread. I only first heard High Priest of Dub the other day when I bought a copy of the original Kingdom LP, and I thought it sounded at odds with the rest of Scientist's output. I believe it is Scientist at the desk on this album, and according to this Scientist discography -- edit: http://rootsdub.free.fr/Scientist-disco.htm -- the dubs are mostly of tracks from three Royals albums.

An interesting thing I noticed is that about a minute into Forgive Them Oh Jah (I think it was this track, anyway) a slightly out of place guitar line kicks in and then, as if Scientist realises he's made a mistake by letting it in, most of the channels briefly fade before returning free of the lead guitar riff. Bizarre. I wonder if this track is an outtake?

Interesting Jonti- I'll have a listen of that tonight. On a slightly different subject, I recently bought the new scientist compilation on Jamaica records and I have to say, I 'm not convinced all of the tracks are by scientist - although some definitely are. Also, the liner notes seem to suggest that scientist was at tuff gong by 1980 which sounds unlikely to me. Anyone heard this yet?

Yeh, heard it. Not convinced yet either, certainly not classic Scientist. If it is his work then they have been mixed fairly recently for sure. Will give it a few more listens though.
