Thats were the youth get it wrong you cant recreate the 70s and 80s roots scene you had to be there.
Perhaps we have been spoilt for choice in london and the uk with big roots scenes that got bigger than ja with the black community coming over in the 50s to work on the buses. so i would say the uk has had the biggest influence in reggae and reggae styles than anywhere.
Just because im a londoner, its my reggae version.

Back in 1978 and until 1980-something you could find roots dances in almost any English town. I went to them in London, Portsmouth, Bristol and Bath.

In many other provincial cities like Leicester, Nottingham, Birmingham, Manchester, Leeds and many more there were dances almost every weekend.

Nowadays as I scan the various clubs to try to get roots gigs to DJ at I find the promoters ignorant of roots rock reggae and early dancehall and always wanting drum and bass and ragga.

It makes me want to promote my own dances, because I am sure the roots rock reggae power can do the rest and fill the dance floors as soon as anyone hears the music.

Rootsman and donsrtumental - i grew up and stayed in Kentish Town NW5. Norf west london.So there was the electric ballroom camden town, the holloway rocket, the boston arms in tufnell park for the dub club and dalsten was a few miles away. I was righ near clubs, dancehalls, and venues all within walking distance.

I used to go to dingwalls in the 80s to see a lot of things. hip hop the old school hip hop, jazz i cant remember if it was the sunday one but i know it was really good., and other things if i could get in for nothing.

Steppa, Dingwalls was a great retreat. Nice sounds and vibe. Those Sunday afternoons brings back good memories.

Thinking back, there was also Saturday afternoons at 100 Club in Oxford Street. That was a goodun too.

My afternoons now consist of work, work and work. Where did it all go wrong
