Haven't been 'round in a while. Interesting thread to find...
While I agree that the newer sounds don't always do it for me, I keep asking myself is that is as much due to me getting old or is there really something to it? Little of each I think.
Much as I love the "classic" roots sound, I wouldn't want to see the music become some sort of museum exhibit-like exercise. We already have "Classical" music.
That said, I don't think its nearness to the US does JA any favors. We're a bad influence on the world in general.
Reggae is a world music now, so I'm hoping that it will come back 'round through JA and the cycle start again. In the meantime, I'm looking toward Africa, as well as checking for what's playing locally. I'll buy and listen to whatever I find that sounds good.
Peace,
James

Re: Whats happened to reggae?
most of the vibe you are talking about has alot to do with the low fi sound roots has lost. everybody want digital these days. all that good ol stuff was recorded on 4 and 8track reel to reels. the only way you will ever get that feeling is with analog. even the more complex better sound quality u.k roots was still on reel to reel analog tapes.
my point is when the music is too clean or digitized it looses its dynamic.

pity party, whining jamboree ...
music is dynamic, won't be same yesterday, today or tomorrow. grow a pair and appreciate what yah love and stop raining on tomorrow.
if you're really passionate about a particular sound, go out there and make some music! armchair musicians, are not only a dime a dozen and more populous than roaches ... they've less utility than tits on a boar hog.
