Strictly Originators.
And I like almost each and every other jamaican d.j. for imitating these brilliant ten !
Think Scotty should be on your list of originators, his "School Days" album was a classic.

Also Prince Heron another Great under recorded D.J.

Do any other (non-JA) people here have trouble understanding what the DJs are saying sometimes?

I'm alright with Prince Far I and Dillinger and more often than not (say, 75% of the time) I can parse I-Roy, Tapper Zukie and Jah Lloyd just fine - but when it comes to people like U-Roy or Big Youth, I usually have literally no idea what the track is supposed to be about.

Their accents are so thick and they toast so quickly that I can only make out the odd word here and there - and perhaps the title of the song near the beginning because I'm listening out for it.

I found Big Youth's 'Screaming Target' album to be almost completely impenetrable to my white English ears...

Has anyone here thought about that deejays on vinyl have a 40 years jubilee this year? I'm not certain but I think the first deejay releases came in '69 on 7" singles.

Greetings to all.

Daddy U-Roy and Big Youth are my favorites for particular reasons: they're both pioneers and have a unique style which every "DJ" followed after them showed into the reggae scene... every "DJ" with no exception copy their singing style... perhaps only I-roy was one of them too around that time but he definitely came after U-Roy and Big Youth.
Tappa Zukie was around the scene early 70's as well, another pioneer, I really like his style and productions... very solid. Dillinger has also a great style and original stuff...
Pretty much everybody in the 80's exept for Eek-a-Mouse was copying somebody which in my opinion make them weak... no inspiration really... just a imitation copy... no messages in their songs... pure "slackness" dancehall!!
But I enjoy some "DJ's" of the 80's like Pappa Tullo and Lone Ranger... Dancehall in the 70's has a lot more to offer i'd say.
As Rootsman said I also think that I couldn't name 10 Dj's ...besides those already mentioned I would also mention Prince Jazzboo and Ranking Trevor for their vocals on wicked rockers rhythms, Massive Dread and Trinity.

bless to everyone
