Some of Scientist's best material was done for Roy Cousins' Kingdom Label with bands besides Roots Radics. Check Kingdom of Dub-classic dub imho. His dub ability wasn't dependant on the Radics. Just that the Radics were the top band of the era so of course one of the leading engineers/dub masters is going to work alot with them.

As a matter of fact check the Jah Thomas dub records that have the Radics backing with him or someone else besides Scientist at the controls. They pale next to those with Scientist. Same band and Jah Thomas Midnight Rock label produced some enduring versions of the same riddims as Junjo.

As for Junjo/Radics making Scientist, those who think this have it backwards. It was Scientist/Radics who made Junjo. I'm suprised that people on this board don't understand that in Jamaica, especially in those times the engineer had far more input than the producr in most instances. This is one. Junjo put up the money for those sessions, like Coxsone, like Skengdon. His biggest musical contribution was bringing in Scientist as his engineer. Before that Scientist was working at Studio 1 as a frustrated assistant who wasn't let near the board very much. Junjo saw his potential and highered him. This is according to Junjo from what I read. Scientist is more responsible for the sound asscociated with Junjo Lawes than Junjo was. I'd be suprised if Junjo was even at the Studio on most dates.

I just read through the whole a this post.

It is true that some people who weren't listening to reggae before 1980 have a slant toward Scientist, and I think this is Lion's point.

They miss everything that went before, without which there would have been no Scientist dub at all.

And also I think Lion's point is that it is wrong to say this man is better than that man, because beauty is in the eye (or ear) of the beholder (listener).

I am also interested by the points regarding the roles of producers/engineers/artists in the musical process -- following on from some of the stuff posted (off topic) on the Female contributors thread:

Speaking of Scientists Kingdom releases, does anyone have Crucial Cuts Vol 1? Is it worth picking up? Is it a compilation or does it actually have "fresh" dubs on it? I'm asking because I've heard a couple of clips from the LP and they were all tunes I already have on other Scientist LPs.

It is a compilation from three of his Kingdom albums.

High Priest In Dub, Kingdom Of Dub and Peoples Choice ... I think.

Yes, Kacidis, that is correct.

I have this LP. A very fine LP, but better to get the other three instead, as Sufferer's Hi-Fi is not wrong in his opinion that the Kingdom cuts by Scientists and Cousins are indeed, superb. I especially like these records.

Also, people seem to focus on the Greensleeves LPs by Scientist, no surprise as they are awesome.

But don't forget his early release with Al Campbell as this almost liv es up the claim made in its title (Best Dub Album in the World)

Or this one, a very fine and very early Scientist effort (with help from others):

I also would like to suggest the clash and duel LPs, such as these, they are all great dubs (IMHO)

and there are even more...

They do all come up on eBay from time to time.

The only Kingdom one I haven't found is Crucial Cuts 2.

I've bought around 3.000 records in three years - 95% from eBay.

Of those, about 20% have been overgraded (I allow for this when bidding if I don't know the seller already) This usually takes the form of undisclosed writing on the record or sleeve.

And of all those records only about 3 or 4 have been very seriously overgraded ie: describe rubbish as mint, or G as EX.

I've also had two records broken in the post, once due to sloppy packing, the other DESPITE excellent packing. I was refunded in full both times.

Not one single seller has ever failed to send my records and run off with my money.

Because I use PayPal or bank transfers nobody ever gets their hands on my credit card details (unlike in a shop where, believe me, it is VERY easy to steal your CC details - unless you pay cash of course) And I can always make a PayPal claim if some low life really takes me for a ride.

I have also brought hundreds of records that have actually been UNDERgraded!

So perhaps you are over-reacting Sean?
