Ever seen a German putting Schinken in his beer?? Where? When??
Would appreciate a detailed answer.

To a certain degree, I think the 'experimental' stuff they're doing at Russian River (and other places, particularly belgium) is actually based on very very old sometimes primitive techniques. To some degree it's more like reintroducing lost or lesser known styles than just playing with a chemistry set.ACEtone wrote:@DonBanyan
Kind of like kids with a chemistry set - so lets try putting this in the vat. Mmmm this is good tasting beer - got a kick too. What was that you put in? Oh just some pencil parings, orange peel and cat hair...
You did wash your hands before brewing this stuff, right?
There are happy and unfortunate accidents in all parts of life, food not being the least affected by them.
We learn as much by mistakes as we do by trial and error
How about cheese?
Some of the bacteria and wild yeasts being used are precisely the types of things most modern brewers try to make sure are NOT present. And to many people trying for the first time, they impart a funky, 'off' taste. But like deliciously stinky cheeses, after a while you develop quite a liking for the funkiness!

A friend of my brother brought a bottle of this schinken brau back from Nurnberg - I saw the bottle but didn't get to have a taste. Maybe a Bavarian speciality?
Really I'm not making it up!
By the way, I'm not criticizing - I'm all for this kind of experimentation whether it be ages old or brand new. I just happen to have rather simple taste in beer myself!

This 'schinken brau' or else has nothing to do with putting ham into beer. This sort of beers is called 'rauchbier' which translates into 'smoked beer'. They add the taste of smoked ham to the beer and they think it is for good.
Bavarian beers don't count for good german beers:D

Re: In heaven there is no beer!
although i haven't had alcohol in 3 years...but in about 4 weeks im gonna have that bottle of augustinerbrau that has been in the fridge since december!
i think the best beer is in germany...i also like belgian ales. i used to love some british ales, as well, and i am sure i will again.
augustiner is my favorite in bavaria. franzikaner hefe weizen is also a popular and delicious brew. bavaria loves its beer, and proves it by drinking it by the liter!
there is a rauchbier from shlenckerla in bavaria that is very tasty. the grains are smoked with i think beechwood to give it the campfire beer taste.
as yall know, in germany, practically everywhere you turn there is a different brewhaus. there is so much to choose from it is stupifying.
i don't really like getting drunk, and with my tolerance down, i imagine 1 good beer and i will be asleep!
i've a bottle of abt 12 in the fridge that has been there for 4 years now!
it's going to be like getting punched in the brain.
by the way...amanita in beer? yikes!
those are very strong little fungi. i couldn't imagine consuming them outside, in a beirgarten munching on a pretzel, and going back for a second liter. and maybe a third. and doing it again the next day. syd barrett syndrome for ya!

What's happening in 4 weeks? Or do you need to gear up that long because you haven't one in so long?super ape wrote:although i haven't had alcohol in 3 years...but in about 4 weeks im gonna have that bottle of augustinerbrau that has been in the fridge since december!
!
augustiner is brilliant; I'll second that. I'm having a Weihenstephan hefe right now, and that is pretty good too!

Guinness for the beer, Viceroy for the brandy.
