Studio One V Channel One - Which studio gets your vote

But didn't Dodd have lots of helpers? Like Vice-Producers if you like?

So was it in reality that much different to the Channel One setup in that respect?

I guess this gets us back to an old thread about what exactly is a 'producer'!

ok, from i listen channel one only, i rate it more than some works by coxsone because i think he did sometimes tunes he shouldnt have been done (nothing famous) while channel one's productions are almost all on the same level of itself i hardly hear a bad chan.1 production while coxsone have tune me would never listen to. but without coxsones melodies there would be no channel one i think.

I think of Channel One as a rockers update of Studio One. Studio One was more adventurous and experimental musically, but Channel One sonically leads the way.

channel one, as scientist mixed a lot over there but tubbys den was the place that beat both these hands down

i agree with you, well charge.
channel one was the sonic rockers explosion. super clean and fat sounds all around.
i dunno about tubby's in comparison. historically, tubby's stands out more i would think as far as the roots of dub goes, but in my collection, i have more chan one records in the top 20 than others.
but, i must say that i like basically all my records, regardless of where/who/when recorded, cuz i cant get enough of the riddim!

Do you mean *sonically* or are you referring to the actual riddims?
If you mean sonically, and I assume you don't, Channel 1 had the advantage of having better equipment.
If you mean riddims, and I assume you do, surely it's much easier when you are *cherry picking* as opposed to pushing the *outer envelope*?

Let's face it those Studio 1 riddims have blood, sweat, tears and a *love* in them that Channel 1 can't possibly have because when the latter *laid* down their *versions* the hard work had already been done.

channel one (joe gibbs too) was more about a new sound. they recycled studio one riddims, basslines etc. with "new" sound equipments.

that's why I think that channel one announced in some way the digital era. it was about sound and recycling things that were done before.

the sound of brentford road is so warm it often gives you the impression you're in the studio. no technical tricks... just regular instruments played by the best musicians... ernest ranglin, tommy mccook, jackie mittoo etc

but I went to jamaican music because I was hit by tubby's and channel one's sound.

I'm firmly in the Studio One camp; the music is seminal and full of deep soul emotion.

Combining the subjects of the excellent Everything Crash lp by the Ethiopian, and the other thread about Reggae bargains, I found by copy in a skip, beat that.

Another point here would be Channel One's dependency of Studio One rhythms
