Dread may not of been the best dj or toaster in the business, but he had the more personality and charisma then all the other dj's put together, and as our friend has said the ladies loved him and a hell of alot of men were jealous of him, which went towards he's down fall , in the end there was no stopping all the rumours and lies about him, so much so that every bank job, mugging and rape in England was put down to him, and by the way he is dead I know because I was at he's funeral, so lets stop the silly rumours now.

Hello Dadsman

Could you tell me what year it was when Ranking Dread passed away please?
I take it you were a friend of his? can you tell us about his early life, like where he was born, any musical history etc etc
After reading all these posts here, Ranking Dread sounds like a very interesting fellow. I think he had a unique voice in the DJ world & i like the tunes i have by him, it would be great if there was more knowledge on the man as an entertainer.

thanks

This is an excerpt from an interview he did with Cyril Saunders.
Black Echoes, October 10, 1981 wrote: From the first day this Dread arrived on English soil, his ambition was to have all the youths rocking to his selection inna different stylee:

»Shaka ah de first sound me really DJ pon. Me does directly love Shaka sound, inna dem time deh, you no see it, so me use to just DJ fe him alone, me de inna dance, me just feel nice and DJ. Me no directly have a personal sound system, fe say ah my sound dat, anywhere me go an me feel like DJ, me just DJ.«
So according to himself he did indeed chat on Shaka sound. This must be late 70's if it was during his early days in the UK.

Never heard a Shaka tape with him featuring on it but hopefully there's one or a few knocking around just waiting to become available on the Internet.

Dadsman, just as JJ and lotsa others I would very much appreciate more infos from somebody as close to him like you!
You can indeed help stopping "silly rumours"!

No matter what person he may have been or not. For us his music should be the most important thing about him. And as been said before, I think he wasn't the greatest DJ artist out there. He was one-dimensional in comparison with the best, but he delivered something special not easy to sum up in words. His style was somewhat fluid, smooth and melodic, and yes, he also had his personal charisma shining through - and I like it.
