I recently hear there an indie/pop band called overtones and it got my brain working cos im sure theres a reggae harmony group wit the same name.
Turns out i was correct, cos upon scanning thru some old reggae tapes off the radio i came across a tune call "Too Much War" by of course The Overtones!!
Great name i must say, now being ripped off by indie heads, was originally a JA vocal group from mid-late 70's, is this legal??
Can anybody give any more info on these guys?? nice tune btw.......
it's hardly a unique name, there was probably a pop band in the past with that name. in fact, a casual google reveals a 50's doo-wop band called The Overtones, and a pop band from the 80's as well.
so, it happens sometimes - if someone had actually made the effort the to copyright the name in the context of a musical group (up until a few years ago there were few laws concerning intellectual property in Jamaica, so that would only work in the rest of the world) i suppose they could lawyer up and stop some current band from using the name if they had enough interest to do that.
I dont think they even have enough interest to be involved with music at all, since i not heard nothing about them anywhere else apart from that one tune off the tape i mention....!
Yes you're correct, when i try to search these guys on the net, it just comes up with pop groups and stuff. Im confident one day that one of RA's users or members will provide more info on these singers and maybe surprise a few heads....
