Who is UK Scientist?

Post by jahadambom »

I have seen this mixing engineer's name on a few different singles now and I am wondering what his real name is. Just judging by the mixing sound, I highly doubt that it is the same Scientist (overton brown) of JA. Here are the three releases I have seen:

Black Roots -4 track 12" Disco 45 EP: Demo Disc Nubian Records (NR0001/81) from 1981 has "UK Scientist" as production/engineer credit on the label

Talisman - Dole age / Free speech 12" Disco Recreation Records Has "Scientist UK" as effects & production credit on the cover and label -I think that one is from 1981

Michael LLoyd - Judgement Time 7" SMP Dubplate records label says Produced and mixed by UK Scientist -This one was done in the early 2000's (less than ten years ago)

So the guy is obviously still active and producing roots music pretty recently. Is there anything else he has done or had a hand in? Any info would be much appreciated .
Thanks. adAm

Richard Lewis or Richard Grassby-Lewis as well as being a key figure in Bristol Reggae as UK Scientist was also a member of the Startled Insects/Insects and now writes soundtracks, he did "The Private Life Of Plants" the BBC natural history series.

His work with Black Roots is featured on "Black Roots The Reggae Singles Anthology" released on Bristol Archive Records September 5th and he's also involved with three tracks on "Bristol Reggae Explosion Volume 2 The 1980s" released October 17th, one of the tracks being a previously unreleased song from Joshua Moses, "Rise Up".

You can aslo find his work on "The Bristol Reggae Explosion 1978 - 1983" and Talisman's "Dole Age" LP, both on Bristol Archive Records.
