ROOTS REGGAE live at JOHN PEEL

Post by rasralo »

Can I buy anywhere the Reggae-live-recordings (Carnastoan for example) that were made at John Peel's show?

They were never made for sale (except Culture, Gregory and perhaps some other session). There was a blog that had several nice sessions on mp3 ripped from cassettes. That's your best shot to get them I'd think. The Musical Youth for one is murther!

John Peel and his shows producer John Walters, formed a record label called Strange Fruit to release all deemed in demand sessions that were recorded and aired. Obviously, not every reggae artists work was ever released. kalcidis@greece is right in that the Culture, Aswad, Capital Letters, Musical Youth etc were released to the public. The website might still be functioning. When I looked (many years ago now) there was a catalogue listing of releases and what was still available. Bearing in mind that John Peel is now dead and John Walters (in my opinion) never seemed to have a natural affinity to reggae, I wouldn't think that there would be much there to appeal to anyone checking this forum. Have a look, the label may still be running.

Prince Fari did one session for John Peel’s radio program. It was never released on record or CD.

It certainly was not 10 numbers though:

07/06/1978 - Prince Far I And Creation Rebel

Spoken Introduction
Black Man's Land
No More War
The Dream
Foggy Road
Front Line

A small world. I remember listening to that particular broadcast. In regard to rasralo's enquiry about reggae sessions availability from the John Peel show I've had a look on a Strange Fruit records catalogue listing and there is virtually nothing there.

The Far-I Peel session is kicking about the internet if you look hard enough.
