Best Shops(s) in San Francisco

Post by Donovan »

Hello All,
Going to be in San Francisco this weekend and wanted to know who has the best reggae selection in or near the downtown area. Looking for an eclectic CD selection (i.e. VI and UK plus more standard stuff). Any ideas? Thanks.

i know there are some good music stores that have decent reggae selections down in the haight and ashbury area. i was staying in a hostel in china town and got down there pretty easy but it was a trek, busses and trollys, but it was easy. Have fun, its a cool city.

Donovan-
Check for Amoeba records on Haight st. right next to McDonalds, I have found many Gems there, Also there is Rasputins Music on Powell st. there are also 2 Street Light Record stores, one on 24th st. and one on Market st. If you have time go down to Berkeley there is a Amoeba and Rasputins on Telegraph ave. just a few buildings down from each other.

Good Luck

*Ameoba* on Haight (SF)in the upper haight (haight-ashbury) where Haight meets Golden Gate Park. A large building that looks like a bowling alley-- because that's what it used to be.

If you are looking for vinyl, try *Recycled Records* further up the road (east) near Buena Vista Park-- haven't been there for years, but they used to carry a lot of used vinyl.

*Groove Merchant* in the lower Haight (closer to Market) might be worthwhile as well.

I'm heading to San Francisco in November and later to Los Angeles and I wonder if there are some record stores I should visit? Amoeba I know, last visit was short and I had no knowledge of reggae, and I'm hoping that this time I would get more out of it.

But please, If you guys know any awesome underground vinyl stores or huge halls full of roots please let me know so that I can spend my money I've been saving!

And the same thing in LA, if there's any store worth visiting, I'd be happy to hear about them!

Thanks a lot!

Groove Merchant is the most likely shop to consistently have some nice original vinyl pressings. They specialize in soul but have an excellent breadth of selection, all packed into a tiny shop. Their reggae selection is very small (maybe ~30-50 records at a time) but they usually have a few pieces that would interest a collector. The owner, Cool Chris, is a great guy and is always willing to help. The shop is essentially vinyl only.

If you are in SF on Sunday night, go to Dub Mission at the Elbo Room. Always good vibes.(http://www.dubmissionsf.com/)

Hope you have fun and happy hunting!
