If you want more challenging bass lines, then generally look back to the reggae and ska era - but that is challenging in the sense of speed and complexity etc. It is actually very challenging to play reggae bass properly - donstrumental has the right attitude - it is just about learning the basic fingerwork and then just getting into the right vibe and playing along. The 'feel' will come if you have it in you.

Not sure what bass to recomend, you need to try a few, im a lefty so its even harder to find the perfect bass i love my fender 75 jazz bass and sounds nice with roto sound tru bass strings.i do have small hands so i got myself a rare japanese made medium scale squire bass which is perfect. anyway i would recomend these books they helped me

im looking to learn reggae bass lines, what brand name of bass guitar should i get ? i want to have that low sound, i know i will need a good bass amp with a bass head, but not sure what kinds of bass they use in reggae, thanks. steve.

I would go to the music shops and try the different models. Different strokes for different folks.
But its hard to go wrong with a Jazz or P bass if you have the money. Many people also use Steinberger. look at the Yamaha and Ibanez Models too.
