Dillinger's Loving Pauper: who is the singer at the beginning

Post by Rastafab »

Hi everyone,
I have a CD http://www.roots-archives.com/release/3 ... ight=52548
where Dillinger toasts over Loving Pauper (perhaps my favourite version), but I never could find out who is the singer at the beginning. It sounds like it's a concert version, and that it might be an uncredited singer who never recorded the song for himself, but I'd like to know for sure
Cheers

I'll take a wild guess at Freddy McGregor.

Sorry, I might have confused the issue. My guess on Freddy McGregor is based on the voice sounding a bit like his. I didn't realise when I made that guess that he had a version of Loving Pauper on a Studio One LP. I agree with your assessment that it sounds like a live performance and I assume it comes from this album:

My guess would be that the singer was actually at the session and that it is like the U Roy live session at the Rainbow(?) where both singer and DJ recorded live so there is no separate recording. From memory Dillinger did a lot of touring with a backing band around the late 70s early 80s unlike most DJs who were only heard on sound systems.

I would be interested in whatever you find out about the track.

Greetings!

I have the album LIVE at the Music Machine, bought it 1981. I'm not sure, but it could be Freddy McGregor. Maybe i'ts Dobby Dobson. The problem is, that you can't find any comments, there is only Dillinger himself. On side two you hear part 2: Judgement Time

Hi,

The singer is Ruddy Thomas

I had this on 45 when it first came out and that vocal is by far the best, much as I dig Gregory, Dobby etc. It doesn't sound like Ruddy to me, check his version with the toast by Trinity, the vibrato , phrasing is different. I would love to know who is singing this, it sounds like a live band and I always fancifully imagined it was the crowd singing the chorus. However, Dillinger's mic sounds badly eq'd and overdriven in contrast to the great mix on the band/main singers voice so perhaps it is just a track that Dillinger's toasting to, if it is, I've never been able to find out. Whoever that singer is he's my favourite. If someone knowsplease spill the beans. 'All right, all right'
