Strippet down riddims or melodic mix

if you listen to michael prophet gunman album or triston palmas entertement album you hear those strippet down riddims (my english is not verry good so i hope you under stand it ) i think those albums are good but i think they ve been better if they where mixed melodey way what do you think ? i like to hear you upinion

I love these "stripped down" riddims very very much. It's more dub-like. Just drums and bass, the other instruments mixed in and out, I just love it. Not much melodies are interfering with the important instruments

that "stripped down" or "dry style" style which is many ways a mix of roots radics + scientist + junjo lawes was a music for the times - early 1980's

it only lasted a few yrs. but to my ears its was different from what came before and was all the better for it!

I prefer the stripped down mix too... Check Delroy Wilson "Dubplate Style"
A lot of 90s reggae of King Jammy etc also very stripped down.

A favourite of mine for stripped down versions, is Jah Lloyd and Tubby's Herbs of Dub.

I think that both styles are needed for the ultimate experience. If you only heard the bass and drum version, it might sound nice, but it doesn't have the same power behind it that it would if you were already familiar with the "full" instrumental version. Because then you know that something is different, there is more than reaches the ears. The other instruments still feel as if they are there, but you cant hear them (or even better, you can hear them very very faintly).

For me it is kind of like when you have a song playing in your mind, you are just remembering it, but if its a well known song you can almost "hear" the actual recording just in your mind. So even when you listen a very stripped down drum and bass mix, I can still feel the presence of the other instruments and vocals, but the main bones of the riddim (bass and drum) are the only thing that you are literally hearing.

And of course hearing other versions improves everything, because variety is the spice (or herb) or life!

80s stripped down Radics+Scientist mix style are awesome because its just pure heavyweight riddim, but I wouldnt want to listen to only that style. There is so much beautiful music that you can pick and choose what fits your mood.

Interesting post, Klaus. Starts me thinking. Reggae was very ahead of its time in that, through this stripped down mix phenomenon AKA "dubwise style", it makes you enjoy elements that are left out of the music, it makes you enjoy what's NOT there. It's quite revolutionary when you think of it...
