12 " disco 45s

Post by Dubbaddikt »

can anyone tell me when extended play disco 45s first came about-I have a 12"disco by Derrick Harriot called "Slave"-one of my all time fave reggae tracks- I know Perry released Disco (Bum)mixes and Jammy released long dubs sometimes 6 minutes or so but who originated it?

I tried to collect all info I could about this some time ago and I summarised it on the above link.

Well ... the Jay's are also mentioned. Somewhere I read there was also a Yabby You 12" or something. Can't remember which though.

More threads on this or similar topics. In the last one the legendary reggae journalist Penny Reel (and in my opinion one of the most knowledgeable people on reggae) is certain that it is Truly by the Jays.

There is also "Police and Thieves" 12" extended with Jah Lion toast (1976), but there is a gap between the two songs so its not necessarily a genuine discomix.

off the liner notes of 'the channel one story': 1976 saw channel one release jamaica's first 12" single in the form of 'truly' by the jays and ranking trevor. it pioneered a format that was fast gaining popularity on the US and UK disco scene and introduced the art of mixing the vocal and deejay cut together to form an extended 'dancehall' style version of the song.

BURIAL: A twenty one gun salute over the grave of the reggae twelve inch single.

Interesting...
