for the first in 1975 to 1985 there are almost no bad album coming out of jamaica

for me it artist like bunny wailer are most overrated stele pulse and i think bob maleys Catch A Fire is o mutch weaker album than kaya for example


and 79-83 there is noting even one album how is bad

I disagree, you don't need no beer for Wa-Do-Dem record. The combination of Eek and Roots Radics is just amazing, he just takes you in his own weard world. But, that's just me... I see a lot of people dissing him here on this forum, but I think one should separate his recent actions from his early work...

I don't agree with you that Bunny Wailer and Bob Marley's Catch a Fire are overrated personally. (I think Bunny's Blackheart man is great album, though I haven't listened to a lot of his other work.) I do concur with you about Steel Pulse though, I never have found them great personally.

No need to be sorry, Mighty M! Personal taste is just that. I rate some Sugar Minott albums I've heard amongst the very best reggae sets around. However, several years ago I would have agreed with you. Many of his tunes just didn't seem to have a heavy enough vibe to them (although now I wonder why I thought that!). Still, I would argue the many other hats he wore as producer, talent scout, mentor, and soundman outweigh his contributions to reggae as a singer.

I agree with the poster who mentioned Bob Andy's Song Book. Didn't strike me the first time I heard it and I'm still not too sure why it's regarded so highly. Maybe I'll warm up to it someday!

Nah, it's kool. Listen, something I learned a while back - it's YOUR music. Rock, soul, hip hop, reggae, classical, country - If you don't enjoy something then don't listen. Put it aside. I used to feel like you and Billy Boom too. I thought Sugar was...I dunno...lightweight.

But he grew on me. Now I think he's up there with Marley. No kidding.

I guess that's part of the point I tried to make earlier. I DUG deep into the incredibly deep well. I guess I got tired of listening to the same rocksteady and early reggae chunes and started to give things I initially dismissed a second (or third) chance. Found out I liked Sly & Robbie as well.

it is a fine album but not as good as reviewers wrote back in te eighties, it being the answer to bob marley.
so my expectations were too high.

and yes pablo king tubby meets rockers uptown, did not appeal to me at all, because it was supposed to be the best dub album and i only heard a common music. and then later i discovered .. meets rockers inna firehouse, which got a very negative review (in holland that is by OOR) and that album totally blew me away.. exactly what i've had been looking for ... fantastic, his best.

to me this thread is O.K. to do, kalcidis mentioned the reason before.
but to say i don't like sugar minott's total output makes less sense. and objectively his "sufferer's choice" is a very fine quality album, why argue about that personal taste.

I have no objections to the original poster's concept for the thread, though maybe one possible better way of wording the question might've been:

"What records, in your opinion, seem overrated by fellow reggae/dub enthusiasts?"

It seems like any defensiveness could be preemtively self-thwarted by everybody understanding that each responder to the question is merely stating his/her own *opinion* about what seems overrated.
It's all opinions about opinions. Nothing definitive is going to come of it, but it can (and has) sparked some interesting responses and discussion.

I thought flashman's response in the first couple pages, drawing the parallel between the attention paid to "Meets Rockers Uptown" for dub, and "Kind of Blue" for jazz, was a perfect analogy (and also shone some light on the difference between what the general population rates highly vs. what genre-specific enthusiasts rate highly).
I agree entirely about those examples. Even though I love both of those records, I personally prefer Tubby's "...Firehouse" and Miles' "Nefertiti" or "'Round About Midnight" (and others).
So, to me, that "Rockers Uptown" and "Kind of Blue" get the vast majority of attention/mentions (for those respective artists/genres), it makes those records seem overrated (to me!).
