Who were Shumark and Robinson?

Post by Dubbaddikt »

been listening to "Lost Treasures from the Ark",a 3 cd compilation of Black Ark recordings. Two of my favourite tracks on it are "Weakheart a Go Feel It" and "Peace & Love" by the aforementioned Shumark & Robinson. Who were they and were these tracks released as 7"s?
Thanks

Peace & Dub

Shaumark & Robinson are great, but little is known about them... "Peace And Love" was an Upsetters 7" (1978). "Weakheart A Go Feel It" was previously unreleased until that dodgy *Lost Treasures* set.

I have heard a Studio One cut of "Peace And Love" from a few years earlier; or rather it's a different song by Shaumark & Robinson but has more or less the same lyrics. (If anyone can identify THAT tune for me, I would really appreciate it!)

The answer is Lloyd Robinson and Mr. Shaumark (remains a mystery).

Another Black ark tune including Lloyd Robinson is called "Wolf Out Deh" featuring Devon Russell.

lloyd robinson is one of my absolute favorites. for my money his voice is one of the most powerful and emotive in all of jamaican music. instantly recognizable. and, more importantly, he's recorded an absolute ton of great tunes, covering ska through to early 80s. a tasting of some of this best (assuming you're not just into late 70s roots):

cuss cuss (he's cut this many times, all are great but the orig for harry j is tops)
out the fire
push push
feel good now
death a come
red bum ball
rudies give up
foundation of the world
out the fire
no more trouble
tug a war
love will conquer
wolf out deh
peace & love
who can't hear must feel
keep on pushing
jezebel
regal reggay
you got me going
too late
and on and on and on.....

sadly he never had an LP released. i think part of the reason is the majority of his early work, and again some of his late 70s roots pieces, were as one half a duo. he recorded tunes credited to lloyd & glen (brown), lloyd & hopeton (lewis), and lloyd & devon (russell). then for only a tune or two he was part of lloyd & joy (joy being matador daley's wife), as well as lloyd & noel (not sure who noel is). do a search in RA and you'll see all the comps he appears on. DEFINITELY worthy of a compilation, could fit 2 killer CDs, but it'll never happen since it wouldn't sell a ton of copies since he's not widely known, plus not many (legit) comps are completed that span numerous producers (too much work/money to invest).

May be the noel you are talking about could be Noel Ellis? The son (or nephew i'm not quite sure) of the great Alton. But i am really taking a wild guess here, as i don't even know Lloyd. Will definetly check it out thanks to your inputs.

Peace
