Where next for Yabby You songs?

Post by Funky Punk »

So, on CD at the moment I've got:

the Jesus Dread compilation (which near enough contains his first two albums, right?)
Deliver Me From My Enemies
Fleeing From The City

What else do you guys think is worth getting in terms of Yabby You's vocal albums (did he even have any more)?

Na, I'm not really planning on re-buying different versions of things that I've already got, or compilations that duplicate a lot of things I already have just for one or two songs.

Cheers!

His dub albums. Also I would buy some of the albums he had with other artists. Such as the V/A he has with Scientist engineering, the Michael Prophet LP's. Really... Yabby in the 70's and very beginning of the 80's can't go wrong in my opinion.

I'd recommend these (hard to find but worth it):

"Vocal & Dub"
"Black Is Our Colour"
"Shanty Town Determination"

In my opinion channel one stuff is mediocre compared to yabby's earlier works. In other words there ain't much to find after you've heard "Jesus Dread" compilation.

you don't get more than a tune from 'deliver me' album on 'jesus dread', but BAF released 'deliver me' separately years later. the 2nd disc of 'jesus dread' has most but not all of the 'walls of jerusalem' aka 'vivian jackson meets king tubby' album. 'jesus dread' is of course flawless, but i've always wondered why room wasn't found for "sufferation e starvation" plus its dub. KILLER sufferer style roots, beautiful, heart rending roots music. and the dub is tuff tuff.

but ultimately that's just nitpicking. :)

i second the recommendation of 'shanty town determination', but that's dj not vocal. the first michael prophet lp is killer, underrated despite being an obvious album, imo. also, i rate highly prophet's 'know the right' album. not all is top shelf, but the big tunes are BIG. "the crisis" and "stop throw stones" are classic yabby/michael prophet.

Another Michael Prophet set worth searching is "Serious Reasoning" which is superb.

Also more easily available is his "Consciousness" set which duplcates about 7 tracks off "Serious Reasoning".

(i) funkypunk thats a good LP - nice compilation - bought it on UK WLN label when it first came out

(ii) i'd agree that just about all the 70's/early 80's stuff is well worth checking out

(iii) the only one i'd avoid is wayne wade's "dancing time" on Grove UK - songs are mostly covers - not nearly as good as his "black is our colour"

(iv) also not that keen on "yabby you meets trinity at dub station" - which sort of masquerades as a 70's release but is really far more recent
