7", 10", 12" ?

Dubplate is not vinyl, but acetate. They are cut on a piece by piece basis. Every studio in JA had such a machine. A lot of money could be earned by making special remixed versions of popular tunes for soundsystems. Dubplates can also be available on 10" , they often have a "metallic" sound. It is not to good for an ordinary stylus either...

Just digging through my vinyl and came across a Music Lab 10". One one side it has 'Jah Righteous Plan' by Willie Williams and on the other Freddie McGregor with 'Africa Here I Come'.

I think I bought it from Dub Vendor in the late 70's. It's in the original moth-eaten white paper 'sleeve' with the titles felt-tipped on with the obligatory spelling mistakes.

I am intested to know, for example, why Willie is on one side and Freddie on the other. Is that the usual format? Why isn't one side a dub cut?

Any feedback greatly appreciated.

two artists on one 45, that's fairly common, it's done a lot nowadays.

Jah Righteous Plan and Africa Here I Come is one of the best of the Studio One/Music Lab "dubplate" series (others included Sidewalk Doctor/Come to Me- Jackie Mittoo/Jay Tees and Hip Hug by was it Slim Smith)- I've got the official release in a green paper bag and thick vinyl making it seem like an old 78, but they came out in the early 80s, they are excellent, hold on to it 6anbatte. They were in dubplate style of vocal followed by a separate instrumental so you could cue them up separately, rather than the Coxsone disco series of 12s which were various versions segued together, sometimes 3 a side.
