New Lee Perry Collection - Disco Devil

Post by Mick Sleeper »

Got the tip about a new Trojan release today. Looks pretty tasty:

Norman – Max Romeo & the Upsetters
Bad Weed – Junior Murvin
I Forgot to Be Your Lover (aka To Be a Lover) – George Faith
Know Love – Twin Roots
Rainy Night in Portland – Watty Burnett
Disco Devil – Lee Perry & Full Experience
City Too Hot – Lee Perry
Words – Sangie Davis & Lee Perry
Roots Train - Junior Murvin & Dillinger
Open the Gate – Watty Burnett
Neckodememus – The Congos
Rasta Train – Raphael Green & Doctor Alimantado
Ketch Vampire – Devon Irons & Doctor Alimantado
History (Of Civilisation) – Carlton Jackson
Sons of Slaves – Junior Delgado
Party Time – The Heptones
Free Up the Prisoners – Lee 'Scratch' Perry
Garden Of Life – Leroy Sibbles

No information on the Trojan website yet, but it's been listed on Dusty Groove and a Japanese site.

And why is this tasty? At a glance it seems like mostly frequently released retreads. But if you're saying it's tasty there must be good reason.

Have to agree, unless they are radically different mixes then all these tracks are all ready available in dozens of other CD's mp3's etc

This looks like just another example of Trojan re-releasing the same old crap whilst sitting on the vaults of hundreds of excellent albums that they never release, Trojan suck

Please list albums they're sitting on which should be re-released!

Even as 12"s this set looks tired. Trojan truly is king of the re-re-re-release.

Read the list of all the albums once released by Trojan

in a quick scan of the first couple of pages I saw 10 albums that you cannot buy anymore, and yet there are 35!!!! mp3 albums available on Amazon on which they have released the track "Monkey Spanner" how many copies of monkey spanner do they think we need? they are clueless

That said they did release Super eight which I'm thankful for.

But in this day and age when all music can be stolen online they should be releasing all their old back catalogue at bargain basement prices as people are only stealing them anyway

Instead they keep feeding us the same old Lee Perry tunes re packaged over and over

What about their recent Ska Madness album.... the same old tunes over and over

Man, almost no reggae is being re-released these days, and all you guys can do is moan and bitch about a release like this and point out its (perceived) shortcomings.

Disco Devil is a solid collection of great Black Ark tunes and it's good to have them together in a nice 2 CD package. Yes, Trojan has released all of the songs before, but on collections that are now out of print and hard to find (such as Open The Gate), so having them in a new set is valuable.

Sure, Trojan are terrible for recycling a lot of music, but they've also released a lot of fantastic stuff over the past 10 years. I would hardly call the songs on this collection "the same old crap".

It's definitely a firm collection of all discosingles.
A few of them haven't even been re-released as far as I can remember (Party Time?-Free Up The Prisoners?)
They might even throw in a few (slightly) different mixes, like 'Rainy Night' or 'To Be a Lover'.
Still very much worth to check out, I'd say. ;)

Come on Mick there is nothing new here all of these tracks are currently available on Trojan releases I should know as I recently got 4 of the above in the last few months, and the rest of the tracks above are still very easy to find on amazon or iTunes, plus they have already been re released in recent memory.. My point is that they could re release so many other albums, but instead they re cycle the same old stuff. At least pressure sounds have managed 3 releases of lee Perry stuff that were genuinely new and worth having. Anyone whohas been collecting lee Perry for more than five minutes will already have all of the above tracks
