Niney - Sing It Wicked Style

Post by Funky Punk »

Anyone have info about this upcoming release from Kingston Sounds? Can't find a tracklist anywhere...

http://www.amazon.co.uk/Sing-Wicked-Sty ... 0096FHUXA/

If this is a compilation of Niney's vocal sides (as the title suggests), then it might be very worth listening to. I don't think that there's ever been an album composed solely of his own songs before...

You never know what is gonna come up with 'Kingston Sounds' label, it might as well be new vocals on top of old riddims.

Maybe this should be a different thread, but I'd be very grateful to know which of the Kingston Sounds/Jamaican Recordings are legit. Because I know that some are bogus, I'm too suspicious to buy any of the ones that look promising...ARE there any that are top notch?

Any recommendations or suggestions?

Thanks.

Some are good. Some are rubbish. Which is why you get so many threads on reggae forums asking about them, I guess...

The ones that I own that are legit, in that the disc actually contains what it says on the outside (as far as I am aware):

Tapper Zukie - In Dub
Tapper Zukie - Raggy Joey Boy
Mighty Diamonds - Leaders Of Black Countries (though the tracklist is a bit different to the orig. LP)
Bunny Lee - Creation Of Dub
King Tubby - Shalom Dub
Barry Brown - Lets Go To The Blues

(those are just the ones I have - there may be other good ones too)

I also have 'Birth Of Dancehall - Black Solidarity 1976-1979', which has some really good songs on it, but one listen will tell you that the stated years on the front are a load of 'hooey' (really should be '82-06', or something).

AFAIK, most of the complaints have been about the dub titles not being what they would appear.

I'd second knowing more about this labels stuff.

I got the aggrovators dubing studio One style which I don't think is entirely legit, to me it sounds like modern dubs of old tunes.

That said as an album I really like it, but it would still be nice to know the truth about it

Even an easy one to get right like the Mighty Diamonds Leaders of Black Countries is still missing some tracks from the original LP. (The dubs for No More Will I Roam and Who's Sorry Now) I have the original LP and would still recommend the Kingston Sounds one if it's all you can find. But it just goes to show that Kingston sounds isn't very reliable label.

It's a strange one. They took off two of the dubs, and added some new songs - some of which I think were quite obscure and hard to find.

Someone did a track-by-track comparison:

That one sounds good - in the mid-70s the Aggrovators did relick some classic Studio One riddims for Bunny Lee.

Those versions were used for many singles and LP tracks.

I'm sure the recordings are vintage, it's the dub mixes that just don't sound like vintage dubs, they don't sound like anyone at Tubby's.... Still love the mixes though

Allegedly (well, according to what someone said on the internet once) some young guy that Bunny Lee knows remixes this stuff digitally. It may also be the same guy who does the melodica squonking in the style of A. Pablo. Though it has also been suggested, I believe on the B+F board once (but refuted by someone here when I mentioned it in passing) that the 'Dr. Pablo' guy from years ago is the one doing the blowing...

It's also been said that the label just releases what they've been supplied by the producers in JA.

Hard to say. People can claim to be in the know about anything on the internet.
