Studio One Disco Mix - Soul Jazz

Post by flashman »

Anyone want to take a stab at explaining why half of the songs on this comp are not disco mixes? Unless I misunderstand the term. But to me a 3 minute tune with no dub does not constitute a disco mix. Does Soul Jazz just title releases based on a whim, or do they mean to have the title reflect the contents?

That said.... I love this comp! I wonder how much more of this stuff is out there floating around. The drum and keyboard sounds, with the sort of cheesy sound effects, so great! I love what I'll call second generation Studio One. I'm assuming it's the Pablove Black, Boris Gardner years?

I believe Soul Jazz has more in the pipeline, but many of their comps have poor sequencing, with totally different styles mashed together, which kind of bugs me; Oh well.

I would like it too if I could get the cd to play all the way through... I don't get the title either as it sounds more like the 80s dub plate style than the 70s disco style 12" releases - the Heartbeat Nice Up the Dance comp looks more like the real thing (don't have it though!)

there's quite a few Studio One discomix 12"s out there.

IMO, a lot of good tunes were left off the SoulJazz release.... Roland Alphonso "Death In The Arena", Lone Ranger "Love Bump", Hortense Ellis "I'm Just A Girl", Tommy McCook "Shocker's Rock", Brentford Disco Set "Bushmaster"...

I too was frustrated that this really failed in the "discomix" department - but what a collection! I have a vinyl copy. Heard there were issues with the CD? Some sources claim that Sugar Minott's "Love and Understanding" is on the CD but since I've never seen or heard a physical copy not sure. I contacted Soul Jazz about a re-release of the vinyl and they told me they lost the stamper!

Yes Love and Understanding is on the cd and it's round about there it starts to skip! It's listed on the cd box but not on the outer cardboard sleeve.

I have the CD & my copy plays fine, no skips or problems with the Love & Understanding track.

p.s Yes i agree Franco, it is a great selection of tunes with the likes of Going To Zion (6.53), Night In Ethiopia (7.19) & one of my favourite Ethiopian tunes Muddy Water, superb!

If you're looking for a good Studio One discomix collection, look for *Nice Up The Dance* (Heartbeat). Proper, nine minute long discomix vibes there!

They have a very unorthodox understanding of the term 'disco mix'. It seems that all the tracks on this comp feature syndrum overdubs.
What is usually called discomix is an extended cut. There are many of those on the compilation anyway.

Great comp, together with 'Studio One Scorcher' my favourite in that series

Yeah, that's what I want more of: the overdubbed 2nd gen stuff that has that kind of spacey late 70's cheese to it. Preferably in extended mix. I hope someone somewhere puts more of it out. Nice Up the Dance is a nice comp of extended mixes but has less of that 'disco' sound as Soul Jazz seems to be defining it.
