True Born African Winston Jarret Is it a LeePerry Production?

Post by Congo Bunny »

Hey y'all

Is the 1972 version of True Born African by Winston Jarret a Lee Perry Production?

I swear I recognize the backing track form a Lee Perry track, but I can't figure out which one

Rhythm is Oppression by Delroy Butler. It is remade tho for True born african. Don't think it is a Perry production, but could be wrong.

Alton Ellis also did a version of True born african. Not sure who did what first. My guess would be Alton's was first, but I have no idea.

Bingo your right thanks DWick, now I can listen to them back to back I can hear they are not the same rhythm. without knowing which Lee Perry track it reminded me off I couldn't compare them.

When I was tying to google this yesterday I read a couple of pages where Winston had said in interviews that he and Alton were working together at the time he (Winston) wrote True Born African

Incidentally I Love this 1972 cut of True born African, its such a great track, going to see if I can find Alton's cut on you tube to have a listen

- Edit just listened to Alton's version, which sounds really similar to Winston's, I prefer Winston's though as it overflowing with hurt and angst

According to Roots Knotty Roots the 1972 cut (on the Sioux label) is produced by Syd Bucknor.
