Re: Mystery song from "Rockers"
Sorry to bring back old thread from the dead. But I also looked long and hard for all the songs in this movies. In particular the two at the outdoor "disco". The first one I'd love to find but no luck, this people call Big Joe - Midnight Rock. I'm fairly sure its Big Joe it sounds like him.13. Dillenger - Answer Me Question [1:39]
The second song many say is Dillinger - Answer me question. And yes there is a very similar version of this song by Dillinger. But I think in the movie the one singing over the riddim is Big Joe. The style is very different from Dillinger (and much more like Big Joe) and also the lyrics are not the same. Dillinger for example never sings in answer me question "whether you are wicked man or whether you are babylon answer me question". Rather he sings "are you a wicked man, are you a babylon". The intro ofc is also different where's in the movie it goes sounds called the midnight rock so watcha man" or something like that.
The Dillinger version will make most people happy I'm sure, but I think the version in the movie sounds better and I'd love to have it. However it seems as lost as the track playing before it. If anyone have a version of Big Joe on the answer riddim I'd love to hear it.
In any case. Big ups to Big Joe and Jack Ruby for all the fine music they have made.

Re: Mystery song from "Rockers"
No doubt, those tunes played at the Ruby dance are the big unknown cuts from the movie. And I agree, that first tune in particular is one of the toughest I've heard, period. Just when the rhythm was starting to run hard, he picks it up! Hossey, just cool yout', riddim mus' run!
Someone earlier in this thread from 2011 seemed frustrated by the lack of info on these tunes.....so goes the world of dubplate. These plates were being made at an incredible rate, and there was no cataloging done, since there was no commercial release, so the names of tunes, the special mixes, etc., those are retained only through memories of those that were there, the relatively finite number of plates that have survived til now, and the old sound tapes in circulation. That Big Joe cut is so deadly, would love that whole thing, who wouldn't want that on wax? But it's not to be, lots of these wicked old plates are lost to the holes of time, sadly.
Why there isn't more effort to compile and properly restore the plates that are still in relatively good nick is still a mystery to me, however. Seems with some ingenuity, workarounds on copyright and licensing could be achieved. Pressure Sounds should be commended for their work to release those Scratch and Yabby You plates the past few years (putting aside some of the claims of foul play by those who own those plates, for a moment), as they are a genuine piece of history, restored forever. Wish there was more.
One of those old sound tapes, a Lord Tippertone from '78, has a WICKED plate of Horace Andy's 'Zion Gate' which I can listen to for days, despite the poor sound quality. Rough and tough. It's available for download on that Who Cork The Dance site, for those who don't know.

Thanks for info. Yeah pressure sounds is doing fantastic work. The more 70ths work from Perry I can get my hands on the more happy I am.
I'm working on making a version of the first song at the disco. I can't toast like big joe though
, especially in that clip he is rocking it hard.

Re: Mystery song from "Rockers"
Good summary Hot Milk. That's exactly it with dubplates. Made for soundsystem use and even the ones that weren't specials (voiced just for a particular sound)were made in tiny numbers.
The way sounds played them with the selector or operator pulling up the needle and wacking it back to the start several times for each DJ made them deteriorate quickly. Also they're like vinyl records. If you keep playing them without a break they wear many times more quickly than if you only play it once and put it away.
As to why there isn't much effort to compile and restore the one's still left, I think it's down to money. A suitcase of JA Dublates from Emperor Faith (big JA sound that stopped playing out in 1984)came on the market earlier this year. Most of them hadn't had much use. People were paying £100s of pounds for the better ones and having done that they won't want to reduce the value by releasing the soundfile sad though it is.
Regards
Rob
