Songs about the departed

Post by Rhygin »

Been thinking of this recently, anyone got a particular track that focuses on the afterlife of a loved one or tribute, ie. Andy & Clyde's We All Have To Part or Busty Browns King Of The Trumbone. Especially interested in roots era...

'Everything I own' by Ken Boothe. Not a rare one, I know, in fact a massive hit. It's a cover, don't remember original artist, and despite looking like a love song it was actually written in loving memory of the artist's father. That makes it a bit more moving in my opinion.

Winston Groovy transformed The Commodores tribute to Marvin Gaye 'Night Shift' into a Marley tribute...quite cheesy though depending on your taste...

Reformed 80's Skatalites and Lord Tanamo 'Big trombone' is tribute to Don Drummond.

if we are counting selassie tributes there must be hundreds. i like "jah no dead" by burning spear and "can't leave jah" by johnny osbourne. though would you really count these as tributes to a departed hero, or just denial/rejection of the notion that H.I.M had passed? that would be a whole other kettle of fish i suppose.

interesting thread topic though.

song was written by David Gates of Bread as a tribute to his father - a big hit for them sometime 1971 or '72, and covered by Ken Boothe in 1974.

I rate Tribute to King Tubby LP featuring lots of the digital era singers and DJ's (Courtney Melody, Pad Anthony, Ninja, Nigga Mikey). Wicked tribute LP...

"Talk About Run" by Clint Eastwood and General Saint is a humorous take on being chased around a graveyard... a bit irreverent to the subject, but a great track!
