Dubbing DJs Compilation, on Jamaican

Post by Slugger »

I know most of us are wary about albums on the Jamaican Sounds label (misleading products, fake "vintage" dubs etc.), but they've got several tempting releases and I'm looking at a compilation called "Dubbing with the DJs Vol. 1"...

I don't have a ton of DJ stuff, so a compilation with all the big names is hard to resist.

Anyone know if/to what extent these are bogus mixes etc., or are they pretty true to the original DJ versions? Just listening to the samples makes me think they're pretty phony.

Also, if someone can recommend a top DJ compilation LP, I'm all ears. Thanks.

Sorry I don't know about that album but I can give you a review of another one of theirs.

Before I found out Jamaican Recordings mixed their own dub versions and passed them off as lost vintage versions. I bought this album.

It's DJ versions that are apparently recently dubbed. I found it quite enjoyable. Mainly because It has very heavy riddims. His mixing style is pretty choppy though. There are quite a few of the songs from that album on youtube so if you give a bunch of those a listen you'll know what to expect. The strength of this album is the selection and riddims not the mixing.

I have to admit I've always avoided Jamaican Recordings now that I know what they are all about.

Thanks Star-- yes, these cuts must fit into the same category as the Inna Fine Style album, new dubs using killer riddims from the golden age...

I'm not the biggest DJ fan but I think the Joe Gibbs 12" Reggae Discomix Showcase Vol. 1 CD is terrific. All the songs start with singers and halfway through the songs the DJ comes in. I personally don't like the other volumes as much.

Well, it depends pretty much on the era you're interested in. If you like the Bunny Lee/Tubby Style, go for Blood and Fire's "If Deejay Was Your Trade": [cover=351,408]

If you're more into Studio1, check the DJ compilations by Soul Jazz:
