Vinyl to avoid?

Just about to wander up to Spitalfield Market. The other week they had a load of brand new reggae vinyl, but I can't remember what label it was on.

Can anyone tell me labels they definitely know that should be avoided.

Yes. I work near there and often wander up lunchtime just to see what's around. Nothing at all today.
I saw a relatively good condition 'Reaction in Dub' the other day, but £30 was a bit rich for me!

I occasionally go to Dub Vendor as I live over that way. I used to go to Daddy Kools in Dean Street. Do you/did you know it? I don't think it exists anymore.
Makes things slightly easier than when I started buying reggae in 74/75!

I tend to buy CDs nowadays (Caiman USA is my favourite site) as I tend to listen on the move.

My interest in vinyl has been rekindled as an old mate tracked me down via Friends Reunited and gave me 30 odd mint condition 70s dub albums. Seriously. He wanted them to go to a good home! That, of course, made me dig out my vinyl.

Then I recently stumbled across this absolutely unbelievable site. I can't get over the depth of information and the knowledge of the people posting on the forum. Unbelievable.

Which shops do you go to? It's easy for me to get to West/central London.

I was in Spialfields about a year ago & noticed a stall selling what appeared to be 'lookalike' Studio One vinyl LPs - nothing illegal, & not actual bootlegs, but perhaps not quite what they seemed - but perhaps I'm being paranoid?

Anyone know the places to get classic used reggae in London?

The shops I tend to go are Honest Jons, Dub Vendor and there are also 3 or 4 second hand shops in Berwick Street were I have picked up a few good releases.

I got rid of my entire jazz and reggae vinyl collection 11 years ago when I had a family and space became a major issue. Its only the last few years that I have been replacing them solely on CD. Unfotunately, much of the reggae that I used to own does not to appear to have seen the light of day on CD.

However, one site that I use quite often is this one:

The guy who runs it is in Yorkshire, but most of the stuff he sells is actually through contacts in the states. His service is fantastic and he usually gets them to you within 5-7 days.

I know you`ve read a lot about the Rhino label and in general they are on to avoid.

However, check this album.

This is album / CD is worth the purchase for Earth & Stones "Wicked have fe dress back" alone. You probably know the dub to this as it is one of the extra tracks on the Leggo Dub re-release.

Don`t dismiss every label on the 95% crap that they sell because it does means that 5% of their stuff could well be worth having.

Listen man, Never judge the LP by it's cover And also I don't understand why you would ask some random people "what to avoid". Basically, "what's good" ?. You've got to take a listen to some of music yourself to see if -you- like it. What significance does the music really have to you if you only got it because some one told you it was good.? ADam
