Hugh Godfrey

Post by rootstrain »

Hi folks.
I have discovered Hugh Godfrey - Chain Gang
Amazing ska version of great tune!
But nothing can be found anywhere on web about it.
What was that 7"?
What is flip side?
What label was it recorded for? (Coxsone I'm assuming)
Does anybody know something about it?
searched tapir with no luck, google as well

And any info about Hugh himself would be apreciated

That track doesn't appear in RKR, so it's possible it was never released as a single. It looks like most of his material (a few singles) was released by Coxsone in 1966/67, though there is one single from 1975 on the Khouri's Wild Flower label.

Hugh Godfrey A Deh Pon Dem (A Dey Pon Dem) UK 1967
Hugh Godfrey Go Tell Them (Go Tell Him, Sir Is Back) JA 1967

Hugh Godfrey Have Mercy JA 1966
Hugh Godfrey Mad World JA 1966

what might've caused your confusion is that it's not Hugh Godfrey, but the Jamaicans who sing this version of Chain Gang... long live the ignorance of the internet!!!
