Tappa Zukie Horns Up! Jamaican Recordings JRLP032
What's the crack with this release - Is it legit? It sounds great but I think I recognize half the tracks from 'Escape From Hell' E.g. 'Take Nine' from Horns Up is the same as or very similar to 'Population Dub' from EFH. Unfortunately I no longer own EFH so I can't do a direct comparison. They may well be alternate takes but it somehow doesn't feel like a long lost album as stated on the tin. Can anyone shed any light on the Horns Up release? As I say it sounds great - but I'd like to know if they are the original recordings or digitally enhanced re-constructions from the master tapes.

I've never listened to this album, but as far as I'm aware Zukie legitimately licenses his stuff to JR. I very much doubt that it's one of those releases where they've just slapped the guy's name on something unrelated.
That said, they did once release a Tappa Zukie comp. with someone else's picture mistakenly on the front, so I might be talking bollocks...
(who is that anyway - Howlin' Wolf?)

Lol @ Howlin Wolf - I thought Duke Ellington!
BTW That's another JR record that I have some doubts about - again it sounds great but is it the real deal???

even though it's not one of those fake ass dub albums, it's a strictly horns instrumental set

I think it really is Tappa Zukie on the front. But a more current photo of him.

I recognize most of the tracks too, but I've always thought they were legit instrumental versions of his productions, though I suspect that they were more recently mixed as the overall sound of the release just doesn't sound 70's to me. Could just be awful mastering I suppose. All that aside I love Horns up its a great set. Let's face Tappa was a golden producer he didn't produce a bad record back in the day
Edit
Just listened to it again this morning and now think it was mixed back in the day. Maybe just dodgy mastering or aged master tapes. Amazing set. Strictly instrumental though not dub like EFH
