Cornfed is not only a bootleg label, but the "releases" are CDRs too!

Yes Cornfed is a bootleg label. What is your point?jumbo wrote:that is a bootleg label
And again what is your point?Chaz wrote:Cornfed is not only a bootleg label, but the "releases" are CDRs too!
In a previous thread I recommended Tommy McCook "Reggae in Jazz" CD released on Pressure Sounds, a great release imo. It got slagged of by many people over the inferior sound quality on several of the tracks.
OK, I own about 60 Cornfed CD`s. They have been superbly remasted and with virtually all of them the music has been sourced from long unavailable original Jamaican issued vinyl albums plus many rare 12" and 7" singles also long unavailable.
The records used to create these CD`s have been supplied by reggae fans from there own personal collections who want to make great music available to a wider audience. The sound quality is fantastic remastered with great care and the inserts more informative than many of the bargain basement legitimate reissues that flood the market.
I personally feel extremely fortunate to have been in the right place at the right time to get hold of these great CD`s and they are amoungst the best in my collection. Most of the music has never previously been available on CD and still isn`t 8-10 years after most of these Cornfed CD`s were put out.
You could play the royalties card and argue the case that the artist and musicians are not being paid there dues, but then in most cases they sure as hell wasn`t back in the day. And how many artists from back in the day are picking up royalties now from legitimate releases? Again very few if any as royalties, especially with reggae, always tends to go to the producers who owned the rights to the songs or there estates if deceased.
Rarely if ever do royalties get back in to the pockets of the singers and musicians who played on the record, they usually got a "one off" piss poor payment from the producer to sing the song or record the track. And when a song broke big it was the producer who raked it in - that is documented fact.
The exploitation of the artists happened back in the day when these records were originally recorded not 30 odd years later by a group of people who wanted to make long unavailable music available again.
So before condemning these CD`s based on the fact they are not legitmate, give them a listen first and then judge them. Thats is of course if you can get hold of them

I wasn't making any big point, just that in answer to the question "has Promised Land been released on CD", you can't include Cornfed stuff. They are not CD releases in the generally understood sense.

Negative about bootlegs: The artists who put a lot of affort and love into the music doesn't get a penny.
Positive about bootlegs: We get the chance to (not only hear but also) "own" otherwise unavailable albums.
Especially for me as a CD-buyer, bootleg CDs are a great way to get albums that were only ever released on vinyl and rereleased as MP3s.
And... I think Scientist is "bootlegging" some of his own music now on CD-Rs. First time he ever receives some money for his releases.

Of course there are loads of bootleg reggae releases, many of which I have, but the crucial difference here is that the Cornfed ones are CDRs. The covers and discs look and are homemade. I have a couple myself.
