Best is the stuff done under Gussie Clarke at the Music Works studio in the mid 80s, especially the Selfish Lover LP and the many great 12inch Disco 45s spun off this LP, all really tough stuff and well worth listening to.

best roots female album is for me Black Woman from Judy Mowatt, the song Black Woman itself is really wonderful;and for today I would say Dezarie with songs such as Don't cry. But I agree there could have been more roots female artists in the 70' (nowadays it's quite common), most of them have a major soul influence.
