The Wailers

Post by RooticaLee »

Of the three Wailers who do you think was the best singer and what do you think were their finest albums released after they split?

I think Peter Tosh was the better singer of the three and for me his best album was Equal Rights, closely followed my Mama Africa.

Bunny's Blackheart man is his best work I think and it's between Natty Dread and Uprising for me as Bob's best work.

Although I think Peter was a better singer than the other two I also think some of his albums were a bit weak, especially Mystic Man, when he started messing about with synths and stuff. All Bob's albums were solid though.

I love Wailers threads! Well I guess Bunny and Peter are both better singers than Bob, but Bob's voice and singing style is just so "special", he's my favorite solo singer of the three.

Best Peter LP: Equal Rights (seems to be almost everyone's top Peter album)

Best Bunny LP: Liberation (yes, Blackheart Man is great too of course, but not as good imho).

Best Bob LP: Survival (no doubt about that. Out of my 10 favorite Bob tunes of all time, at least 5 are on this album)

Weakest? That's a tuff one. If you don't count the Peter/Bunny and the two Live-LPs I guess I'd have to say Kaya. I love "Sun is shining" and "Is this love", the rest is very good, but not super killer imho. Exodus is second, than Uprising.

Survival, Natty Dread, Rastaman Vibration are his strongest I think.

To me Bunnys "Rock & Groove" is also a very strong and sometimes underrated set. Beautiful backing by the Roots Radics inna showcase style, has a dancehall feeling but it's still roots.

I know you didn't ask me but his weakest was natty dread by a mile, it pretty much sucked

Obviously I think Bunny was the best wailer, Black heart man, rock and groove, struggle, Liberation, all great to my ears

Lee Perry who work with the original Wailers said :
"I like originality and Bob was original".
I discovered Reggae Music (By Bob) at 14/15.I'm 38 and i still like this music.
I know about his history(60's,70's & a little 80's) and i'm still considering that Bob is the greatest JA artist (and i said artist not singer).he was the best singer of the trio but my wailers favorite tune is "Feneral" singing by Peter.

my favorite album :rastaman vibration (Have you ever heard a tune like "rat race" in JA music ?) .A lot of people said there's too much Rock music in this lp and it's not my feeling: it's not recording at channel one with the Revolutionaires and mixed by king tubby but it's still 100% roots music.
