Hugh Mundell

Post by Rootsman »

Hi,

I have several of his tracks dotted around over several CD`s but do not actually own any of his albums.

I have heard the "Africa must be free by 1983 + dub" and also the "Jah Fire" with Lacksley Castell.

Is the 1983 + Dub the best album to purchase as a starting point or has anyone got any better recommendations.

Your comments are, as always, much appreciated.

Respect

"Africa must be free" > "blackman foundation"(or "time and place") > "mundell" > "arise" ...is a good way.

I'd say Mundell's "The Blessed Youth" on Makasound is the best place to start. It has the same tracks as the Shanachie album "Blackman's Foundation" plus some wicked bonus tracks like "Oh How I Love H.I.M.", for example. In addition, I think the sound quality is better - or at least phatter; the Shanachie CDs usually sound pretty weak IMHO. Of course not everyone likes the current style of maximising the volume by using limiters and compressors etc. like Soul Jazz for example...

For me the greatest album is Time and PLace (you can, as it was said, find these songs on blessed youth). The other albums are wonderful too, especially Africa must be free. I'd say Jah Fire and Arise are less interesting

... but still interesting cause everybody has it's own opinion and style. To me 'Arise' is one of the Hugh Mundell killer lp's together with 'Africa must be free by 1983'.

I think you can't go wrong with him. He's a great singer, one of my favorites.

Blessed love
