King tubby's "Dub gone crazy" on wrong record

hello friends

so a few years back i bought a copy of King tubby's "ina reggae dub style/dis a yard dub" with linval thompson.

it was my first reggae record in my vinyl collection, and i didnt knew much about dub albums. the record shop owner recommended this one so i trusted him and took it home.

amazing record, made me go after more. so i started to listen some more king tubby's and discovered that the record i bought was in fact "Dub gone crazy"

and i dont know how, i searched the tracks on both albums on youtube and the ones on my record are really from "dub gone crazy" wich have, of course, another album cover.

if someone changed the covers, the label on the record would still say where it came from, but no. the cover and label are from the linval thompson album, and it plays "dub gone crazy"

and now, looking for some more records to buy, i found one on ernie b's exactly the same as mine.

the back cover shows 16 tracks, and its listed only 12, they have a preview button, and they play the dub gone crazy as well.

anyone know how this is possible?

The answer is that it's a bootleg. The clue is in the label. Abraham's is a notorious bootlegger based in Canada.

its alright to be a bootleg, but why it is swapped?

i mean, the sound of linval thompson clearly matches with the bootleg description but why my record dont play the bootleg and play "dub gone crazy"? hahaha

or your saying that because is a unofficial release it could be some sloppy error?

Yes, I think that he just took whole albums licensed to Blood and Fire and renamed them. On the plus side, I'd love a copy of Dub Gone Crazy on vinyl

yeah, thats the only thing that came to my mind and i found about all this.

hahaha and yeah!, i really like the dub gone crazy way better than this bootleg

dont get me wrong, i wasn't complaining at all hahaha

dub gone crazy has a better selecta and the sound quality is very good

King Tubby's "African Love Dub" LP on Clocktower Records is the same, another bootleg copy of "Dub Gone Crazy" with a renamed tracklist.

I read in a french magazine that Linval began to make some bootlegs of his own lp on blood & fire. He stopped it when he received a phone call from London ( I guess you can resume it by "Linval , what a ****!!").
But i've never seen a copy of that bootleg.

the funny thing is that i dont "really" have that bootleg cause it plays another record hahaha

and i like "juggarnaut dub" "grand masters dub" "okinawa dub"
but i think i enjoy more the king tubby's versions over barry brown's songs
"step it up in dub" as one of them. and the cover versions of "sun is shining" and "crazy baldhead"

While lack of quality control may be an issue with the label, Abraham isn’t a bootlegger, who by definition releases music without the owners’ permission. Abraham does license titles from producers. He licensed the back catalogue of Clocktower records from Brad Osborne’s widow (who also sold it to RAS, which is another story…), and has had extensive dealings with JA producers such as Striker Lee, Linval etc.

The way I heard the “Dub Gone Crazy” story was that Abraham licensed the tracks from Striker, and he used the B&F release as a mastering source for his own release. This was told to me by someone who worked at B&F, who also said that they could tell because the tracks have unique embedded digital signatures. A violation of mechanical rights without doubt, but it’s a not a “bootleg” of the B&F release. He also mentioned that a “big and well-known” U.K. company has done the same thing on occasion: released tracks on compilations that were mastered from a B&F release (you won’t have to think hard to know which one I am referring to).

Printing B&F jackets and labels, and trying to pass it off as an authentic B&F release, would make it a bootleg. Violating mechanical rights may make you a shady practitioner, but not a bootlegger.

It’s a shame that Clocktower’s catalogue wasn’t put in the hands of a custodian who could do it justice. They released an incredible array of titles in the 70’s and early 80’s that deserve better mastering, bonus tracks….in other words “the Blood & Fire treatment”.

P.S. I am not Abraham, nor do I work for him…..I am just trying to add a bit of context to the accusation.
