Greetings,
Everything that I have read about the Jolly Brothers refers to the disappointment of the Conscious Man album. It appears that the "Conscious Man" single made its way onto the UK pop charts, and that the rest of the album did not live up to the listeners' expectations. It is said to be thin and lacking in depth. I disagree. Although the vocals are often in sung in unison and the riddims aren't the most complex, I believe that it coincides perfectly with the overall feeling of the album. The "Concious Man" single is a nice track for a little while, but who can say that they have listened to this track consistently over the years? My point being, it gets old pretty quick. Tracks like "Brotherly Love", "Back Biter", and "Play Play" deliver a very simple, positive message in a light-hearted manner that would lead a listener into righteousness by example. Tracks like these can endure longer play counts because they are simple and unobtrusive. The album is not as militant as some other roots albums of the time, but it does not need to be. The message is there. I believe that this album is a classic and not the weak-heart roots that it is so described.

great album, greater tune. who could bore of it? The 12'' cuts are wicked and these's always the Upsetter cut on Megaton Dub vol 1. An evergreen classic...

Hi Jah Chicken
"The "Conscious Man" single is a nice track for a little while, but who can say that they have listened to this track consistently over the years?"
In answer to the above question I can assure you I do. Also "Brotherly Love" is definitely one of my favourite tracks of all time. It's timeless.
Incidentally, the first time I heard "Conscious Man" was when I bought "Ballistic Sureshots" -http://www.roots-archives.com/release/2388 - in 1978 (!) and I have been listening to it regularly ever since.

Jah Chicken,
Per your post, I listened to this lp last night. Thanks for the roots reminder. I like just about every song on it. Babylon A Fight Rasta +++ don't forget that one. Going to push this lp to the top and record it so I can play it more often, that's how much I re-enjoyed it.

Yep, this is definately an under rated LP.
Regarding the ballistic Sureshots compilation, this is one of three LPs. The three being Ballistic Breakouts, Sureshots and 2nd Assault.
All three LPs seem strangely under rated, often going for just a few pounds on ebay.
I can't find Breakouts on Roots Archives (is it on here?) but I can assure you that it is a brilliant LP with some great cuts.
Mods: Contact me if you want pics and track listing from the Breakouts LP.

Hi Leggo Rocker
Thanks for the heads up on the other two Ballistic albums. I'll definitely look for those.
