Did you know...

Post by kalcidis »

So I thought we'd do something educational here. There's often small stuff you pick up in reggae that you might feel others would be interested in but there's no use to make a whole post about such a small detail. So just lets post them here.

Apparently Jah Palm and Lascell Simion are one and the same guy. The wicked »All Creatures Great & Small« by Lascell on Clarendon 12" (over a wicked cut of Dub Organizer) is the same as the title track »All Creature« on Jah Palm's first album.

I can't understand how it could escape me that Mystic EMP (Mystic Eyes) fantastic disco »Reality« (His Majesty 12") was Junjo-related when Barrington sings over the same rhythm on his Shine Eye Gal on the alternative cut of the song (on his Shine Eye Gal LP on Burning Sounds)

Was also happy to realise today that one my favourite discos; Clarence Parks »Can't Take You Little Woman« (paired with an even better deejay version on the flip done by Clarence himself!) has a next cut in the title track of Stewart Brothers Breaking Down Barriers LP. Not as good but still nice.

Nice infos and good thread idea. I've been meaning to check out the Shine Eye Gal LP for a while. Are all of the tracks on both the Shine Eye Gal set and Hunter Man (and Bounty Hunter) set different versions?

Something that struck me recently, but is probably known to most, is that the Taxi rhythm is based off Little Roy's Prophecy. I was disconcerted when I heard a dancehall bassline rumbling across my apartment when I thought I had queued up the Prophesy LP in my bedroom.

Something I saw on midnight raver blog (& posted on Trojan)- Barrington Levy - One Foot Jo-Jo is about his father, who was a pretty mean/abusive drunk , if you listen to the lyrics...

From what I've understood it's about another Jah Life affiliated singer's father. Check PM

Did you know there is a Jah Woosh toast to the recent Iroko reissue 7" Sufferers Prayer by Enos McLeod.
It's on Woosh's LP Ital Movement & is called Peace & Love.

Bounty Hunter (Jah Life LP) U.S release. Backing credited to Channel One All-Stars and Life (Hyman Wright) had U.S license for this. Surprisingly (or maybe not?) Junjo isn't credited here at all!!

Out of Shaolin Temple and Hunter Man?? I know one was released in UK by Burning Sounds....

However by the time that Barrington released "21 Girls Salute" on Jah Life in 1982, Junjo got a co-credit for production with Hyman Wright! Lets face it in both cases they were little more than the money men who funded the release

The two were working partners in the beginning, with an agreement that Junjo would cover the UK and Jamaica, Jah Life North America.

But just "money men"? I'm not sure that this is fair, as Life in particular was quite involved with the early stages of Barrington's career, and took an active role in both the musical production as well as Levy's songwriting.
