Sugar Minott - needs a mention

Post by leggo rocker »

I don't think Sugar Minott gets enough mention on these forums.

So I am giving him a shout, just for the hell of it.

His voice is superb, his productions sublime and he is, for me, one fo the few reggae artists to make a success of the digital sound.

I only regret not getting to see him during his heyday in the late 70s early 80s.

His smash hit track, Good Thing Going, is so good I've collected several different pressings (and even some alternative mixes) of it over the years.

Ghetto-ology is a roots classic. What other Sugar Minott productions are strictly roots?

Jahadambom - Yes, I have the RCA pressing of Good Things, and the Hawkeye (in black and also in blue wax). I also have a later remix version, which is different and also cool. I don't have the original press Good Thing Going LP, which I would be interested in as long as it is EX or Mint even. I have the later CD version.

Mick d - Ghetto-ology is great, as is the dub version. Again, I have the dub on CD but am still seeking a good copy of the LP. Any offers?

Other great roots LPs by Sugar would be:
1:
http://www.roots-archives.com/release/857
2:
http://www.roots-archives.com/release/105
3:
http://www.roots-archives.com/release/946

The track 'Have You Ever Found A Love' is an absolute classic on that last LP.
4:
http://www.roots-archives.com/release/714

On that LP the tracks 'Inna Dance Hall Style'
'Slice Of The Cake' and 'No Vacancy' are Sugar classics.
5:
http://www.roots-archives.com/release/738

This also has some great tracks and is one of the best LPs from the Sugar and Barnes (Wackies) hook up, such as:
'Good Thing Going' of course!
'Wicked A Go Feel It' the great title track.
'She Stays On My Mind' Sugar's lovers rock at its very best.
'Freedom Train' The very best in Sugar Roots.
And another brilliant Lovers tune sung with so much feeling it almost stirs a tear is 'Think It Over'

All of these should be the type of Sugar you like if you like Ghetto-ology.

Sugar also sings sublime songs in his very best style on this LP:

The Tracks, 'Two Timer' and the hard roots rock 'Strictly Sensi' on this LP make my spine tingle everytime I play them.

But be sure to play them REALLY loud for full effect!

Thanks leggo rocker. Yes, Wicked A Go Feel It is a classic album. I bought it recently and have really enjoyed it. I'll look out for your other recommendations.

Spent the afternoon playing through Sugar Minott vinyl. Some excellent 12 inch 45s followed by several LPs.

I hadn't listened much to African Girl before, and now I play it again I realise it is another Sugar classic.

Right now Sufferer's Choice is shaking the foundations of the house with the massive bass lines. And Sugar's sublime voice belts out lovers rock and roots rock in a way that only he can.

Awesome stuff!
