I heard a dub by King Tubby called Lightning & Thunder, I loved the effect he creates of a storm and wondered if this effect was a common thing in dub mixes? I would say I am a moderately knowledgeable fan of dub but I haven't heard this effect before, or at least not in as extreme a way as this track.
Can you experts recommend some other tracks that feature this storm effect? Also how was it made? I heard that Tubby used to whack his reverb unit with his hand to make some sounds?
Please recommend some "Thunder effect" dub tracks

It's a spring reverb. You can easily make one yourself.
Check Gussie P. At one time it seems he was relying on the spring reverb more than anything else

i dunno how super easy a spring reverb is to build, really... you need an appropriate tank and input/output circuitry to get signal to and from the tank. Tubby used some variant of a Fisher Space Expander reverb, which were fairly common in the 60's and 70's - typically found on home organs. nothing too spectacular, but the drive/return circuitry was all tube which is nice.babaluma1 wrote:@kalcidis

the tune i always associate with Tubby (or one of his proteges) bashing the reverb is the dub mix of "A Quiet Place" called "A Noisy Place". it's a 70's re-lick of the old Paragons hit with additional vocals from Horace Andy. super duper extra classic.
Youtube it, it has lots of unsubtle reverb bashing.

This is a quick example of how it could be made.

There isn't much more to it honestly. But of course I'm sure such a quick and dirty solution won't sound as nice as a properly built spring reverb. But then again it's more about what you build it with rather than how complicated it will be. The principle is still the same.

All excellent recommends, keep them coming and I can make a playlist of the best thunder tracks on Youtube. The less subtle the better in my book, I love it!
