Gregory or Sugar - the BIG showdown

I don't normally go for these who's best topics!

But last night I sat up late with a good friend, a big reggae fan, listening to Sugar Minott and Gregory Isaacs LPs.

He said you can't beat Gregory and I thought maybe Sugar is the best singer of the two.

What do you think?

You know, I was thinkin of those two artists today, while i was pondering who the best lovers rock singer might be. in my opinion, its probably Johnny Osbourne, but thats another discussion.

Sugar and Gregory have very distinct voices and their own strengths. my personal preference is probably Gregory, but mid-80s onwards his stuff I can't really dig. Sugar is very hard too ("Black Roots" album on Mango label is hard to match, no skippers.)

Hi guys

I know that such topics always brings about lots of discussions but it's fun in the first place.
I am a big fan of both artist. Both has plenty of quality material and both has lots of garbages i may say, i think Gregory had tons of garbages in the 80's that i have almost ignored all his materials for that particular decade. On the other hand Sugar was less attractive in the early 90's with so much filler materials that we could have live without, So i guess it all comes down to whom had the most classic materials. I will go with Gregory then.

You shoudn`t compare them. They are individually great artists.

There are only a few artists who are able to sing lovers the right way. Gregory & Sugar are.

Lot a artists try and all they doing is singing some stupid superficial shoo-bee-doop bullshit thing whe it comes to lovers.

I`ve heard that Gregory prefers more keyboard sounds in his tunes while Sugar is more in guitar work.

Both are verry good songwriters. For me, G. is more the lady`s man while S. reminds me of a big smiling youth.

Gregory for me every time. He started in the "Golden Age" (mid 70s)and in my opinion he showed a lot of originality.Sugar came along a little later when it was easier to copy.

My memory is that on UK appearances Gregory drew much bigger crowds.

Have to say Gregory does it for me, theres a few tunes i have which are so good, i dont know a sugar tune that could touch them.

gregory isaacs for the last ten years is the worst performer in reggae i see videos of him and give thanks and praise i wasn't one of the people who paid to see that performance.
i saw sugar minott when he was sick and in a lot of pain and even though his voice was terrible sounding he gave it all he had. much respect to the man.
