Even some classical musicians have to do populist stuff, in part to support the 'serious' music they really want to do - it happens in all walks of life I suppose.

I just had a hip-hop producer in yesterday wanted me to pull every gun tune I had for him to make a soundalike record. I gave him "Cokane In My Brain" haha. He said "do you have anything like that except about guns and ghettos."

ehhhh.

This is really old news. KRS-One, Just-Ice, Kool Herc etc. came way before this new collaboration and reference. Reggae Deejays influenced Hip Hop and vice versa. Blinded by genre confusion/compartmentalization, but this is not a history lesson now!

I find much of this thread annoying and culturally arrogant. Who are we to judge what the "true reggae" is? Or that we are the "true reggae" fans because we like what we consider "true reggae"? So the people in Jamaica who listen to the new music coming out, and support the artists, and interact in the Sound Systems aren't real reggae fans like you? They, the people who supported Reggae in Jamaica after Bob died and buy the new reggae and support the new artists are helping kill reggae? And you who buy only records from 20 or more years ago from artists who are largely no longer active are the only thing keeping Reggae alive? Am I following your logic correctly? And so because Jr Reid or Ini Kamoze collaborate with contemporary artsts they are killing and/or demeaning the music? If so, do you feel that Peter Tosh,Max Romeo,Sly & Robbie and so forth did the same when they collaborated with the Rolling Stones or whoverer? You mean to say that you don't think that if Bob Marley was still alive today that he wouldn't be doing similar projects? Bob, who always wanted to break into the Black American Soul audience? And if he did would you say he was killing the "true reggae"?
Who are any of us to determine what is "Pure" or "True" Reggae? Reggae is and always will be first and formost music made for and by Jamaicans. That is not to say others can't apprceiate it or be involved with it. But to set onesself up as the JUDGE of what is true or pure reggae is arrogant IMHO.
