Hi Matthew

I bought the LP "The Way It Is" - I Kong
Top Ranking #TC082-http://www.smokeyroom.net/albums/thewayitis.htm- when it came out in 1979 on the back of the tape I had (recorded from the B&B Show) and was incredibly disappointed as it was neither the vocal version I had or a vocal version of the Pablo cut.

I recently bought "More Pressure Vol 1 (Straight To The Head)" -http://www.roots-archives.com/release/4366- and this does have the original 1972 Ricky Storm "The Way It Is" accompanied by the original instrumental version - "The Way It Is Version". The original recording was released on Top Cat.

The 1972 song was then re-released on Top Ranking in 1979 with the Pablo cut on the b-side.

(Both Tommy Cowan labels, I believe).

Hi Lion

Actually, until I bought "More Pressure Vol 1 (Straight To The Head)" I hadn't heard "The Way It Is" for at least 25 years! Amazingly, it was as good as I remembered.

I'm hoping the Pablo cut is as good as I remember as I still haven't heard that for at least 25 years.

Great discussion guys!

The I Kong/Ricky Storm album has always intrigued me since I stumbled across it on this site.

Unfortunately it fetches a hefty price on 'EPAY' so the re-release through VP as LION stated is definately a blessing.

Here's the proposed track list and bio:

1 GHETTO CRY
2 LIFE'S ROAD
3 WOLVE'S IN SHEEP CLOTHING
4 BABYLON WALLS
5 SET BLACK PEOPLE FREE
6 SINNER MAN
7 I WISH (WE'LL ALL BE READY)
8 THE WAY IT IS
9 LIFE'S ROAD (DUB)
10 BABYLON WALLS (DUB)
11 SET BLACK PEOPLE FREE (DUB)
12 SINNER MAN (DUB)
13 I WISH (WE'LL ALL BE READY)(DUB)
14 THE WAY IT IS (DUB)
15 LOVE WAS (DUB)

Errol Kong AKA I Kong grew up in Kingston, Jamaica. He is the nephew of legendary reggae producer Leslie Kong (Beverly’s Records) and grew up in reggae. In his youth he was a founding member of The Jamaicans (which included Tommy Cowan) and recorded the hit ‘Ba Ba Boom’. In 1972 his first solo single was released on Tommy Cowan’s Top Cat label as Ricky Storm. By 1978 I Kong had recorded his only album, The Way It Is which featured the hit single “Ghetto Cry” Presented here with dub versions of the tracks, for the first time on CD.

Hi Matthew

I must admit I didn't like the I-Kong album "The Way It Is" at all -http://www.roots-archives.com/release/995. It just didn't have that "atmospheric" feel that the 1972 single had.

I can vividly remember receiving it mail order from Dub Vendor, ripping the packaging off and rushing up to my bedroom to play it.
I was totally and utterly gutted that it wasn't the version I had on tape.

Shame I don't still have the album as I would have happily given it to you FOC!

hi matthew "the way it is" is not the unique album he made ; I Kong did an album in 1987 for Rohit Label I Kong & Jamaicans "Africa Calling", most of the same tracks than "The Way it is" but with other mix (more modern)& one track "Whoe Whoe" who didnt appear in "the way it is"

Right on 6anbatte...
Thanks for thinking of me and I too wish you still had that copy.
Sorry you didn't enjoy the album.

I still haven't heard any of it. There was a previous thread I started and a sound sample was put up, but the link was bad. The album cover and song titles just have that Fred Locks~Black Star Liner vibe to them, I guess thats why i'm intrigued.

Collieman: Thanks for that info!
The album from 1987 is called "African Calling" correct?
