who is shella record???

I found a record called "warzone" put out by a toronto record label "Monica's" from around ,78 (i'm guessing here). Anyway a lot of it is pretty weak, with thin covers of soul tracks but there is an absolute killer tune called "roots jamaica" by a woman called Shella Record. It's in a really african rootsy style.... Does anyone out there know of anything else she put out, maybe under another name? According to the guy that produced it (who runs a store in Toronto)she was from JA not toronto, but he couldn't remember anything else....

Hi not sure who she is. I have been askin around on that one for a long time. But if you asked George, lol , he wouldnt be able to tell you anyways. George hasnt been all there in along time. But as far as I have found out, that track is actually owned by O.Creary of Half Moon fame. If you do find anymore info pls do post it as I will do the same.

hey rasdragon, thanks for that i'm glad someone else is on the mission. Too bad george (the owner of Monica's records in Toronto and producer who worked with bunny lee (correct me if i'm wrong ??)won't be able to enlighten us. Could you please tell me more about half moon?

Half Moon is a label from Toronto in the mid 70s to early 80s. Very heavy roots on that label and some light offerings. There was a compilation out a year or so ago "Glory, Dominion & Power" on a label called PK Records. A good compilation of the label.

It is still missing some crucial titles but very good still indeed. You do get one of the hardest tracks (imho) 'Set Me Free' by Dill Smith.
Also if not relized by the above post George is the actual person behind the label Monica's. Monica is his wife who owns what is there now Monica's Hairdressing & Supplies.

Oh also for Canadian's out there a great 7" to look for on the Monica's label is Johnny Clarke - Dance In Canada, nice cut to dance ina greenwich farm!:)

thanks! i'll check out that comp for sure! (it is available from ernie bs.) I'm living in TO but im not from canada originally so it's cool to learn about hard TO labels. I hear "summer" had some nice stuff too?

You should also check Kops on Queen st. for it or Rotate This... One of them should have it.
